Witherspoon struggles to find chemistry with men...

In this she fails to have a spark with either guy! It's happened before...
I think she might be a lesbian. Whatever, but half the time she seems to actively dislike her male co-stars.

Don't know about the lesbian part but I was trying to figure out why this movie disappointed me and I think that lack of chemistry was a big factor.

I agree with the lack of chemistry part, though I'm not sure Reese is to blame.

Paul Rudd's character and especially Owen Wilson's character were extremely unlikable. For me these two actors brought nothing to the table in this movie. Owen Wilson's character is just an idiot who doesn't care about anybody except himself. Paul Rudd's character is whining one second and then totally confident about stealing some baseball pitcher's girlfriend from him. I mean the playdough gift??? C'mon son.

However, I don't blame the actors for this, because I know they're both capable of being likable and funny characters as I've seen them do in the past. It's just bad writing and directing. Plus, I'm not sure they were casted correctly in the beginning. Am I the only one who found it incredibly unbelievable that Owen Wilson is supposed to be a star pitcher with a 94 mile an hour fastball? Or that Paul Rudd is the president of a company? Which by the way, the audience is never told what this company is or what it does.

Well anyway, similar to what was said above, I didn't find a whole lot of the interactions between characters believable or even interesting which is a shame because there was a lot of talented actors in this movie.

I actually thought Wilson had better chemistry with her than Rudd did, but everyone felt off kilter. I think she's having trouble choosing adult roles. She did so well with young women, like Elle Woods, but she seems to struggle to show how to be an older woman. She also really struggles with working with actors who improv and her last few films have been with Owen Wilson, Rudd, and Vince Vaughn. She's going to struggle in that setting.

And lastly, the story itself is awful and I think she struggled with the bad writing. In this and 4 Christmases, you can tell she felt awkward and never gave 100% like she does with good scripts.

That's an interesting theory. I guess if you grow up in a kind of bubble you're not going to have certain experiences to draw upon as an actor. The only guy I've seen her click with is Joaquin Phoenix and probably because he gave back exactly what he was getting. The word is Reese is a little on the bitchy side.

I was about to say the same thing. The only movie where I've seen her have good chemistry, is Walk The Line. In all other movies, she's fallen flat. Even in Sweet Home Alabama. With both Patrick Dempsey and that other guy, it was kind of there... but just not on par with what people expect. So weird. And we all know that the guys she's with, don't fail on the chemistry side with the women that star with usually, only with Reese does it seem to fail. Ah well. I guess you can't win them all, but isn't it the sign of a good actress when they can have chemistry with anyone? At least, I'd expect that. Maybe she's just overrated?

"Pick me, choose me, love me!"

Wow. I just watched this movie and the first thing my friend and I said was that Reese has zero chemistry with any of her male co-stars. She is a type A personality (even called her production company that) and I think that may be more of the issue. She is too guarded, and feels the need to be perfect. She doesn't let down her walls and as an actress she needs to do that to get chemistry. I did find her to be cute in the movie, but I didn't understand why two men were falling all over themselves to get her. That was Reese's acting, not the writing I don't think.

reply

Yes, she is extremely "guarded" as an actress. And for an actress, this is a detriment. This might explain why she is so good in shallow fluff like "Legally Blonde" where it's all surface. But she can't keep doing that forever. She's going to have to start taking some major risks as an actor. I sense she has a lot of rage that she tries to hide; now if she could tap into that...But she definitely needs leading men to play against that are alpha males. Real macho *beep* heads like Sean Penn, Treat Williams, a Baldwin or two...you know, that type.

I haven't seen this movie yet, but I am surprised she didn't have any chemistry with Paul Rudd. She was in a movie with him years ago and they had great chemistry in that one. I think the movie was called Overnight Delivery.

reply

Nothing beyond brother and sister, which made the whole thing weird.

Let's just put it this way - Reese Witherspoon is no Julia Roberts.

Rich says: "Let's just put it this way - Reese Witherspoon is no Julia Roberts."

You are so right, I can watch a movie with Reese, but cannot even begin to watch a movie with Julia Roberts, she is so annoying.

reply

Let's just put it this way - Reese Witherspoon needs a Dirty Sanchez.

I said it, so it's true.

I disagree. She had great chemistry with Paul Rudd in overnight delivery. Watch that movie, it was cute. I think she had chemistry with other actors as well. It might just be the script and directing that affects her chemistry with some of these actors.
anything but ordinary please

I totally liked that movie... Its a good lazy sunday type of movie

I was thinking about why this sucked so much, and I remembered that Reese was cute w/Rudd in Overnight Delivery. But something happened along the way that sucked the "oomph" out of Reese...getting cheated on by her ex maybe? I have always liked her as an actress but now that I think about it all the roles I thought she did best in she was a prissy bossy bitch...A Far Off Place and Election. And you guys are saying she really IS prissy & bossy...so....I guess she's not such a great actress she just used to choose better roles.

reply

she just seems frigid & smug, even in real life.

reply

I had to laugh at this thread because my husband and I have had the same conversation about her with respect to everything we have ever seen her in. The thing is, she doesn't come across as a sexual being. She has a "mom" vibe about her, and everyone knows that their mom doesn't do it.

If you know your own mind, what is real and what is not, then do as you see fit.

reply

She looks like a "good friend", not a "desirable hot woman". Marriage material but wouldn't make you very excited.
