Again, Witerspoon is not Roberts.

Ok, time for movie stars has gone but still Julia never had huge flops like Angelina, Nicole or Reese. So she is still the queen.

Agreed with Always...Julia hasn't done much in recent years, and yes she has had her flops: Duplicity, Mary Reilly, I Love Trouble, America's Sweethearts, The Ant Buly, Mona Lisa Smile, Ready to Wear...and even Hollywood considers Hook a flop. And that's just off the top of my head. I can't even tell you the last blockbuster she was in...maybe Ocean's Eleven, which she wasn't the star?

reply

to answer that, the last big hit she had where she was the lead was "Erin Brockovich" and that was ten years ago

reply

Eat Pray Love cost $60 million, and made over $200 million worldwide. And the movie was sold for a big part on her name (whoever read that friggin' book?). Not many stars these days can claim such power. So, she's still a big star.

reply

(whoever read that friggin' book?)

Me. It was horrifically bad. I can only imagine how awful the movie was.

agree with kingwhy some people going soooo stupid. If she is not a big star noone in Hollywood is a star.

Duplicity had 60 million budget made 40 millin in just states
Mona Lisa had 65 millon budget made 65 million in just states.
They are maybe her worst grossing lead starring movies and they are not big flops.

How do u know has 120 million budget, will make 28 millon?
and yeah Eat Pray Love made over 200 millon worldwidely.

Her name stil can sell a movie, she does not have films whose budget are more than 80 million dollars like other people have;' she uses her name' not the budget' or films genre or other things to sell..

For example Depp and Will Smith are considered as big movie stars but all their hit movies' ubudgets are more than 150 million dollar. Rumors say that she will play in Snow White, probably its budget will be more than 150 million and it will make more than 200 million.

reply

I agree. There is no guarantee that a movie will be a hit when Julia Roberts is in it.

reply

If you think Duplicity is a flop then you should not recommend movies buddy , Duplicity has first hand acting in it but I guess we all look for different things in movies

Clearly you're a biased fan out to make Roberts look good because what was Duplicity last year? She has even had flops at the peak of her stardom in the 90s. No one is Julia Roberts. Not even Julia Roberts is Julia Roberts anymore, if you know what I mean in terms of her stardom. Eat Pray Love did okay with the overseas totals, but that's because it was a popular book. Put Roberts in any other vehicle she would have bombed.

You're calling me a douchebag because I gave straight facts?

All the numbers you gave were word wide, which for Roberts' name aren't that good--those numbers were what to be expected in the US alone.

Eat Pray Love--when it first opened was considered a bomb because of weak numbers--her name didn't bring anyone on--the book was a huge seller. The movie stuck around in theaters long enough and stayed consistant since audiences enjoyed it. It still underperformed.

Valentine's Day---again, not a headlining job for Roberts--she is in the film maybe ten minutes.

Charlie Wilson's War---again, not much of a hit, underperformed--with names like Hanks and Roberts

Charlotte's Web---again, not her name...she's a voice in a huge cast of voices for a much loved book.

Ocean's Twelve---again, she didn't headline the film

Closer---not a blockbuster and people did not like it.

Mona Lisa Smile--a financial flop, was expected to do much more money

Ocean's Eleven--again, not the star

America's Sweethearts--considered a massive flop, was expected to be a major blockbuster

The Mexican---a moderate hit

Erin Brockovich---her last actual blockbuster that she starred in

reply

LOL! Evidently execs' do not give a $hit about your facts or they would stop casting her, you're delusional if you think a movie with $40M budget and $120M boxoffice is a flop. Obviously you have no idea when in year 2005 a movie makes $120M in theaters it makes in next few years 400M for its video and TV market, haha :)

Valentine's Day : They promoted the movie with Julia's name. She had the biggest paycheck and other actor joined the cast because Julia was there.

Charlie Wilson's War : A political dramedy which's topic is not very populer made 65 million only Hanks and Roberts could do it together. She had very small time but promoted like she was lead.

CW : Could be better but made its money.

O12 : Bad movie but hit. Ensemble cast work.

Closer : about 120 million worldwide for a drama film costed 27 million dollar and Julia's peycheck.

Mona Lisa : Expected more but made 145 million worldwide with a 65 million budget.

O11 : She was the biggest star in that time . (still the one with most audience)

America's Sweetheart : It's a hit nearly 100 million in just states.

Mexican : Not a big hit but okey numbers for its budget. And Julia paid 20 million Brad paid 10 million so it can be an answer for who is more valuable for O11 cast stars.

Erin : HIT and a female driven drama.

I always sat, she does not have huge blockbusters like Smith or Depp so compare their drama or lower budget movies with her and you will see why she is still making the lists. (Maybe will have with Snow White later.) But she never fails really bad like Wtherspoon (How do u know, vanity fair ... , kidman : invasion golden compass ... jolie lara croft2, alexander, tourist.... ) So she is still on top.

please.. every star has flops here and there.

Yes, "Kingwhy" execs pay attention to these facts. Because a movie makes money, doesn't actually make it a hit. It goes by how much the studio expected it to make. So...to you movies like "Van Helsing," "Knight & Day," "Prince of Persia," "Sex and the City 2," "Chronicles of Narnia 2," "Robin Hood," "The A-Team," "A Christmas Carol," "Watchmen," "Princess and the Frog," "The Incredible Hulk," "Valkyrie," "The Happening," "Australia," etc, etc, etc are all hits, yet the studios consider them failures. Sure, they made money, but not nearly as high as expectations.

reply

You're so naive! (not only you but of course many or I should say at least 99% percent of the people in this world and a tiny portion of it represented by imdb board members)

Look: Do you REALLY think execs are these nice and caring people who invest their money on something that actually does not pay off? (and according to you this is happening everyday!) If those you mentioned are not hits then What's a "HIT" anyway? Can you please consider Avatar a hit PLEASE?

I mean it is quite obvious (to me and I hope it soon becomes so to you) that those with money in their hands lie all the time and like crazy to media (Not to mention these numbers, "expectations" and hits and non-hits are mostly products of mass media hallucinations and not even direct statements from top execs.) I mean I would lie too! Why shouldn't I lie about the profits my movie makes? So Julia Roberts becomes a $100M actress? So I lie and "complain" all the time that I am going down the drain, this way not only I can deprive the talent (I'm not talking about JR really) of their rights, my image of innocent, poor, destitute Hollywood exec, mostly spread by mass media crying over non-hit movies, is left pristine. Believe it or not trend of business in Hollywood is lot nastier than you and I can even imagine. I can explain more if you're willing to read. I also suggest you to read stuff by a guy called Ed Epstein.

Julia is a has-been!

And Angelina Jolie has not had many flops as you previous stated. If you want flops go over and check out Jennifer Aniston's movies.

Anyway I kinda like Reese Witherspoon but I dont think she is such an attraction as people push her up to be! Ive only seen her older movies. Legally Blonde. Sweet Home Alabama. Shes good but I wont see a movie just cause of her.

In Julia Roberts case ... I will NOT see a movie that she is in! The last movie I saw with her in it was Pretty Woman. She nothing special at all!

A real movie icon is Meryl Streep! I know she is older than the actress we are discussing but she is a legend and I can honestly say she NEVER had a flop!

You cant even compare Jolie with Roberts in boxoffice a discussion. She must pray god because she has Brad and she is in the news becuse of brad and aniston. And she is a fake person who used her sexy body before and now she is not even beautiful. stop.

reply

Try 'Freeway' and 'Election'. I don't like the later movies.

reply

I disagree... Jennifer Aniston is the most overrated actress EVER!

reply

So agreed, she's so 90s

"Whoever said that beauty's on the inside is a liar..."

reply

If Julia Roberts did Reese Witherspoon's character for this movie,it would have been better inspite of the script. Look at Eat,Pray,Love. She helped that movie even with a more disastrous script and interesting character to make lots of money.

reply

Roberts' last film flopped, she hasn't had a hit since the 90s!

I can't go to jail. Look at me, I'll get raped like crazy.

reply

Eat Pray Love earned $199 million. Is that a flop? I don't think so.

reply

Yes, type eat pray love box office on Google and Google suggests "eat pray love box office flop" and I read it on a paper, that wasn't my quote.

I can't go to jail. Look at me, I'll get raped like crazy.

ROFLMAO! Google suggests! So if people are searching for something, well it must be true!

"moon landing hoax" and "year 2000 end of the world" must be true too?

reply

Eat Pray Love was a huge flop!! Most people that I know who went and saw it ended up walking out if the theatre without watching it to the end...myself included!! The movie only made the amount it did because of Julia Roberts' name, not because it was a 'hit'!! Too bad they don't show how many people walked out of the movie halfway through, that would easily show the true flop it really was!!
