Was the ending meant to be so...terrible?

I mean the only thing I could think was NO!. Reese's character was a bitch. She had zero charm, and was running around confused and self-involved all the time. She was ultra selfish and switched between her alpha male athlete and the beta 'nice guy' whenever it suited her.
George deserved so much better. If this story happened in real life, Reese's character would dump George's ass a few weeks later once she was bored again. She came across as the type of woman who wants a high status man who treats her badly to date, and a male friend who worships her on the side to get her emotional fill.

Did the producers honestly want us to think that this was a "happy ending"? The only good thing about it was that George didn't go to prison for something he didn't do.

On the other hand, his father will spent the rest of his life there! But hey, what do we care, the guy took the girl!

This movie was a big zero in ALL levels (even the cinematography by the "renowned" Kaminski was terrible), so, focusing to Witherspoon's character is not even worthy. If I watched a random cheap TV romantic movie with unknown actors on a local channel late at night, there are big chances I would feel more emotional than this pure emptiness. What a waste of money. Couldn't they give all these millions to Africa and feed some starving kids? Idiots.

I disagree. The Reese Witherspoon character, Lisa, was complex. It was a challenging role for any actress to play.

I liked the ending. But it felt very open-ended for such a romantic movie. I wondered if the two characters would go on the bus back to his apartment and have a very disappointing sexual experience. Which would not have to be a deal-breaker. Reese Witherspoon's character, Lisa, might think: have I made a huge mistake? The two might end up being just very very good friends instead of a love match. This possibility would certainly throw the wrench into Paul Rudd's character to save his own skin because he wanted to be around for that very important love interest.

I can't imagine smooth sailing for these two. Such different people.

Well, nobody in this picture is perfect. I'd say she was simply caught up in it.
