Decent directorial debut by Patrick Wilson.

Good production values, decent enough story.

The scares were a bit lacking but it's his first time directing so it's not a surprise he can't manage to reach the tension that James Wan achieved in the first two Insidious movies.

The first two are the best, I'd say this entry is roughly on par with parts 3 and 4. A decently consistent franchise thus far.

Third (or fourth) best horror movie of the year so far. Not a great year but we're just past half way through with plenty of other releases still to come.

2023 horror ranked;
1. Evil Dead Rise
2. Scream VI
3. M3GAN **('technically' a 2022 release since it was released in parts of Europe in December 2022)
4. Insidious: The Red Door
5. The Pope's Exorcist
6. Infinity Pool
7. Knock at the Cabin
8. Beau is Afraid
9. Renfield

Looking forward to checking out Cobweb and The Boogeyman this month when they hit digital, 11th and 29th respectively. Last Voyage of the Demeter is a Universal release so it'll likely be on digital quick, maybe at the end of August or very early September. Also looking forward to checking out Talk to Me given all the hype, but LGBTQIA24+ always take forever to go to digital the gimps.

Picked up Evil Dead Rise and Scream VI yesterday - looking forward to watching those. Saw M3GAN a few weeks ago, liked it. Insidious is definitely on my list.

EDR and Scream VI are definitely two of the biggest horror hits this year. Have fun pal, hope you like them.

Question re EDR. I've seen all the ED movies several times (and the TV series). The person I'll be watching EDR with hasn't. Can they go in cold to EDR, or do they need to have seen any of the others?

reply

They can go in cold, you don't need to have seen any of the others.

Evil Dead Rise was the worst out of all of those. Braindead and beyond stupid.

so so wrong. You just didn't get it

I enjoyed it. I found the directing solid but a tad conservative. The film overall was ok! More of a drama rather than horror.

Boring.

I'm glad it didn't go jumpscare-heavy. It gave me Halloween End vibes.
