1. No.
2. Learn what "jumped the shark" means.
3. Stop using "jumped the shark".

I'm having trouble with a patient of mine; he's a teenage drug addict who's being molested. By me.

What makes you think I don't know what "jump the shark" means?

Because you clearly do not.

reply

Wait did it jump the shark because the Fonz is in it?

Haha good one.

I think the term jump the shark has jumped the shark.

I haven't seen season 4 or 5 yet, but 1-3 are so insanely brilliant. Sucks to think 4&5 might not be as good. For some reason 4 is $10 more than anyother season digitally from amazon, it's harder to justify spending $20 or so on 14 10 minute episodes than the $7 the other seasons cost. that's prevented me from checking it out so far. I'll definitely still give it a shot though soon.

Even if I quit there's not a chance in hell i'd stop

Regarding Season 4, I have just noticed the Warner Brothers Archive site has Season 4 available in their Made-On-Demand format in DVD for $18.95, plus shipping. There is a drawback or two however.

1) It is not a studio quality DVD, but "made from the best quality available video source, not remastered, etc.".

2) It is only available for shipping to the USA.

Your post doesn't list your location, so this info may not be helpful to you.

The URL for the WB site and season 4 is:

No. If it was trying to be a more or less realistic sitcom then to jump the shark is possible. Childrens Hospital is not a sitcom. It's like an anti-sitcom + sketch show + deadpan satire + slapstick satire. They throw continuity and sense out the window if the joke/plot they want to do demands it. They also do it simply because breaking expectations of realism and continuity and giving into slapstick is itself funny. Coincidental that you say this considering Henry Winkler portrayed Fonzie, and the episode in which Fonzie literally jumped over a shark while water-skiing spawned the phrase. But anyway, I disagree. If anything the show has gotten better and more creative as they've become more willing to experiment with styles.

Henry Winkler was on Happy Days and he actually jumped over a shark? Really???

Literally, yes. As in that was to be read literally. It wasn't a real shark, and it was a TV show. But given the phrase "jumped over a shark," yes, literally.

Sheesh, why do I even bother. Somebody needs to go back and take Sarcasm 101.

Seriously, I KNOW WHAT JUMPING THE SHARK MEANS. I AM OLD ENOUGH TO HAVE WATCHED HAPPY DAYS THE FIRST TIME AROUND.

This show can never "jump the shark" because it started off as ridiculous, cartoonish and contrived. It belongs in a small niche category of TV shows like "Soap", "No Soap, Radio", "When Things Were Really Rotten", and "Police Squad!" (funny, most on ABC)

And I agree with the other poster, I don't think you know what "jump the shark" means. It's the moment a TV show begins an inexorable creative decline using ever-more outlandish plots to recapture their diminishing audience's attention. This show could only do that if it took itself as seriously as "Grey's Anatomy" or "ER".

That is all.

Typically sarcastic remarks are detrimental to a conversation, and, as is clear in this situation, your remarks sort of killed any potential conversation. I had absolutely no idea you knew any of those things so please don't fault me for not having detailed knowledge of your knowledge. You could have said you were aware of that information, replied to another point I made in my comment, and we could have had a lovely conversation. Nope. I get sarcasm and vitriol. Though good on you for your brilliant and snappy sarcasm.

This thread is funny because Children's Hospital's entire goal was to "jump the shark" with the first episodeā€¦and every episode thereafter.

Even the most primitive society has an innate respect for the insane.

When Ted McGinley appeared. Seriously, they should have him replace Henry Winkler for an episode.

THAT'S RACIST!

I agree this show can't jump the shark. It's built around being so ridiculous, it can't jump the shark. All the more reason to love it!

...and I am just going to have to feel this way until I DON'T feel this way ANYMORE!

reply

I don't agree that it's jumped the shark, and I've only watched the first 4 seasons, but hopefully I can explain what OP means, as he seems incapable to do so.

S1-3 was set mostly in this weird world of Children's hospital where, although totally ridiculous, it could technically be feasible. Other than a couple of episodes.

post-s3 they have stuff like people dying and coming back next episodes, a LOT more episodes that aren't the regular viewing (e.g. the British episode, the 70s episode, the episode where they are filming the episode, the play episode)

But plot twist: While writing this I realised that two of the four examples I came up with were in s3. So, I'm just going to join everyone else in saying I don't understand why you think it's jumped the shark, and I've wasted my time writing this, and you've wasted yours reading it.

Good day.

reply

As everyone else has pointed out, the show really can't jump the shark in the sense of "going on so long that they run out of good ideas and need to resort to idiotic gimmicks to fill out the seasons."

However I would definitely agree that season 4 is when I noticed a decline. Not so much the performances, but the writing isn't as strong a lot of the time. It no longer has the breakneck pace of jokes and gags (at least ones that land) it used to.
