Biggest plot hole of all: cable cars are all collected at closing time

Seriously, of all plot holes in this movie there's one that makes this entire film pointless.

I don't know what kind of crazy ski resort this is, but literally all ski resorts pull the gondola lifts (cable cars) back to their storage and store them there when they are not operating. The operators can't close until they've collected all the cars and safely stored them inside. I mean never mind the fact that this is something that's done every day at the end of working hours, but to think they would just leave a ton of cable cars suspended like that, knowing that a major storm is coming and would probably destroy all this expensive machinery and of course make future skiing (which in this film would take place starting Friday) impossible XD

Has anyone even been to a slope just around closing time? They pull all the cars back to storage, leaving the cables completely bare. What kind of company leaves their equipment and machinery out in the cold/when not used and lets its investment deteriorate out of pure laziness?

Since cable cars are gathered and assembled at the end of the day, none would be left hanging on the cable, hence no one could get on one in the first place.

What about real life examples of this happening to people then?

reply

But they're not in a cable car are they? I don't believe they store the kind they're on in a storage.

reply

cable cars or cable chairs (which is what this kind is called i suppose), i've noticed both kinds stored when they open and close. even if there are companies who don't practice this, doesn't it just seem illogical to leave them on the cables, just flopping around during a storm, potentially harming the infrastructure? would't they deteriorate much faster if just left out there with the elements? i know they're built to last, but so are cars, ships and they still age faster when not stored properly.

reply

This was actually filmed at my local resort and that's exactly how it is. The chair lift just hangs there. I've been trapped on that very lift due to technical difficulties. If they were stuck in the right spot it would pretty much be exactly like the movie. That older style chair lift just remains in place all season long.

To know how literally every ski resort operates one would've had to visit literally every ski resort and stayed around to watch their closing procedure. This movie is about one that doesn't follow the rule and is run by slackers.

Whether talking about ski resorts, luxury liners, amusement parks or any place that's open for public recreation, there are bound to be those that are outrageously lax in their practices. While this is a movie made for suspense, I would be surprised if someone out there in this big world doesn't have a horror story to tel about human error and negligence. Lol

reply

Well, there were examples in real life where people stayed on cable cars like characters in the movie, from what I heard.

I guess reality is unrealistic.

reply

Exactly. The OP doesn't believe that real people can screw up in real life. I guess he or she doesn't believe that people can fly out of rollercoasters. I guess they think things are only real when everything works perfectly.

reply

While I agree with the people who believe this is one of the most laughably stupid movies ever made, the OP has no clue what he/she's talking about.

I've been skiing in the northern New England states my entire life and the chairs on most chairlifts aren't "collected and stored." Gondolas/Cable Cars are, but not most chairlift chairs.

The newer and faster detachable chairlifts can be detached and stored in very extreme weather, but it's very rare that they'd collect and store them during the ski season unless it was a very prolonged amount of time of extremely windy weather. It's far more common than not that even the detachable chairs will just stay connected to the cable most of the time.

Actually not every skiing resort does this they always do it for the gondolas but not the cable cars i have been there when its closed and they just leave them hanging and there wasnt any storages for them cos usually the storage is right next to the lift. They even leave them there on summer when there is no snow

reply

I've been too several ski resorts in the Tn, IN, NC, CO, UT, WY, and CA/NV, and literally none of them stored their chairlifts at night. so obviously the op overestimates the frequency with which ski resorts do this.

reply

Let's just say all the cable cars, in real life, are collected, then this movie would have lasted 15 minutes. So to make the movie work, the cable carts stay outside.

Is that ok with you OP? It's a movie.
