What would you have done?
I personally would have jumped, landed on to the wolf's back, scared it and made it run with me still on its back :P

shareThey made a very bad decision. They bribed some poor guy and even when he said it wasn't safe (with the bad weather coming in), the stupid kids insisted.
But lets pretend I am.
I'll pretend I'm that girl. I'd wait for morning (without throwing away any warm clothes, zip up the jacket, cover hands and anything else I could. When morning came I'd try and climb the cable any way that I could (with hands or hands & feet) and make it to the pole and climb down the ladder. Once down I'd look for a weapon, make one if necessary, or if someone was still in the lift, ask for them to throw down a ski stick or two. Wait for the other two (or one) guys to follow suit and then we'd all go down together (safety in numbers and all that).
I'm not weird. I'm limited edition.
I see two options.
1. Remove your jackets and zip them together, thus making one big sleeping bag, all three share body heat (with the girl, preferably, in the middle), wait til morning and slide down the cable to the ladder.
2. Remove your jackets and zip them together, then one person use them like a rope to lower themselves down to as close to the ground as possible, thus making the drop a lot less dangerous.
Of course, they never should have been there to start with. You never want to be the last one down the hill. Just too risky.
If we all liked the same movie, there'd only be one movie!
Yeah, after watching part of this for about 2 minutes on Encore, I was puzzled as to why they didn't just take off their jackets, sweaters, scarves (and ski pants if necessary) to make a rope. Obviously, it wouldn't have supported their weight for long, but would've given them enough to quickly slide down making the drop almost nothing. They wouldn't have been able to retrieve their clothes so they would've had to get down the hill in a hurry but it shouldn't' have been a problem and was better than just sitting in the chair.
I also thought of using the coats to throw over the cable and slide down from chair to chair, but the cable probably would've ripped through the coats pretty quickly and they wouldn't have been able to hold on long with the cold either.
If I'm remembering correctly, where their car stopped was in a tricky spot. They were kind of "dipped" down so that the car in front of them and the car in back of them were both slanting more upwards so that there wasn't a way to "slide down" because it was an uphill battle either way. But I can't be entirely sure about this. I saw the movie sometime earlier this year and I think that's what I remember from watching...
shareI asked myself the same question several times during and after this movie and I honestly don't know. It would be one thing to be stuck in a buildy - even a shack - but being up on the ski lift changes everything. You have to get down because you're freezing to death, but can't because of the wolves.

I think I would have also attempted to climb on the cable. The only difference is I might have taken off my jacket and draped it over the cord to protect my hands...and yeah...use my legs also.

the clothing-rope is a really good idea, I didn't think of that. I was also thinking maybe Lynch could have taken his ski boots off, and put his arms in them for protection to make it across the cable, since it's L shaped it would catch it in the crook. i guess the only problem is that it would make it difficult to climb up the chair.
shareI kept thinking while watching the movie, why didn't he jump with his board on (ski's would have been better)and even at an angle, it would have broke his fall. Or use a ski to slide down the cable or try to tear off a piece of the lift chair, like a piece off the back and use that to slide down to the other chair etc. But hey, don't we all have bright idea's when we watch movies and think we could have done it better and lived? lol
I was disappointed that Joe turned into wolf tartar.
The clothing rope would work best for me. I'm too heavy and lack the arm strength for the cable-climb option. Tie all the clothes together and hang the ski pole by its strap to the last item of clothing, preferably a jacket that you could tie an arm through the ski pole strap. Slide down the "rope" as far as possible and hang by your arms. You at least reduce the distance to the ground. Then do the drop-and-roll thing. Find a heavy branch to fight off the wolves, and slide down the mountain as fast as possible to get help for your friends who now lack clothing. Scary to think about...
shareyou do realize that if they use the clothes as rope, they can just pull the rope back up and put their clothing back on...
shareYes, after I posted I realized that. Duh. But they'd probably want to throw the ski pole down to use as a weapon to ward off the wolves. The one guy tried it and didn't do too well, IIRC.
shareI would have made a rope out of clothing and climbed down. Once on the ground, I would have said "boo" to make the wolves scatter, as North American wolves aren't aggressive towards people (checking wiki, the last person attacked by wolves in the lower 48 states was in 1989). I would have then walked down the hill, broken into the resort office and made some cocoa.
shareI have heard that wolves tend to be more shy than aggressive. But there is already some suspension of disbelief going on here. If the resort is in New England, I can't imagine wolves are terribly common there.
shareWell, I can tell ya one thing -- jumping would NOT have been my plan A...that's gotta be like Plan G...at least. I'm pretty good at the Monkey bars -- I think I would have tried the climbing down the rope thing, at least, before the jumping thing.
I would have also waited until morning -- let the sun make the snow nice and slushy.
I didn't understand why that guy didn't at least wait a day. I mean, they already miraculously survived the nighttime snowstorm -- they could have at least said, "OK -- let's give it until morning...then figure it out..."
You have to think they could have made a pretty decent clothes rope with three people. You've got scarves, belts, ski poles, jackets, shirts, hell even pants, to string together. That's got to get you at least 15, maybe 20 feet. Then hanging by your arms from the end of that, you've got maybe a 10 foot drop from a chair maybe 35 feet in the air. You could probably survive that with maybe minor injuries if you did the drop-and-roll thing. Better than a free-fall from 30 feet. Just make sure the pieces are tied together well and don't slip apart. And, yes, wait for daylight.
shareWell that actually happened to my cousin and his GF. They got stuck at about 50 feet up in the air, but my cousin actually worked there and no one knew he was up on the chairlift. So after I saw this movie I asked him what he would do because I knew he worked there for a while, but didn't know that something similar had happened to him.
So what did my cousin do? he wrapped his gloved hands in scarves and hat and monkeyed down to the next chair, then the one after that until he was very close to the bottom. His GF suggested taking their clothes off and turning them into rope, but they were too thick and hard to tie hard enough without undoing and their shirts not strong enough to hold them and also wouldn't have been long enough. So the clothing rope wouldn't work. And he didn't wait until the next day or someone to show up - he says it's better to start moving or doing something while the energy is still there. The GF used both hands and legs on the tether. He also says when you jump from a chairlift it's always feet first - never äss if the snow is soft then you'd most likely be ok even from 50 feet up.
A close friend of mine does parcour and he can jump from ridiculously high altitudes and doesn't get hurt. He just jumps and rolls like some kind of bouncy ball.

can't outrun your own shadow
The problem is that it is almost impossible to tie a rope made out of clothes, it's too thick, you cant do proper knots. They would have to rip them to long thin pieces and i dont think they had the tools or the time to do that. Then you run the risk of loosing ALL of your clothes if the ties dont hold. Well it's is a idea worth concidering but i think your waaay better of taking the line down.
