What would you have done?
I personally would have jumped, landed on to the wolf's back, scared it and made it run with me still on its back :P
shareI personally would have jumped, landed on to the wolf's back, scared it and made it run with me still on its back :P
shareIf you had the skill at skiing, put on your skis, jump off the back of the chairlift in the direction of the slope. Go with the slope. When you hit the ground, the forward momentum and the downward slope of the hill would help break your fall so you didn't break your legs. You'd hit the ground skiing really fast.
"I'm not A1nut because I'm normal...."
uh....no. You would break your legs.
What would I have done? Taken everyone's jackets right at the beginning, wrapped up my head/hip,knees and jumped, landing sideways. Of course I would have thrown skis/snowboard first and taken off the boots. Then assuming I could still ski, and seeing how freaking close they were to the bottom, call for/get help. In reality though, climbing up and hanging/sliding to the next pole and using the ladder to get down would have been a better idea.
Oh, you NEVER jump from a lift when there's other people on it, as the roll back is insane. Look that up.
http://us.imdb.com/name/nm2339870/
I HAVE jumped from a stranded lift (but I haven't seen the movie yet). There was a lot of soft snow underneath (the huge and still going on snowfall was the cause of the stranded lift). We were about 10m off the flat ground, and after an hour of waiting we tossed the skis and jumped. I dug a hole about 3m deep and had a hard time coming out.
I have also illegally jumped from a lift as it was going over an 'interesting' thing to ski (read: a couloir that wasn't reachable from the top by skiing down). This time closer to the ground but with major steepness underneath, jumping with the skis in the direction of the slope. It's hit or miss as you don't have forward momentum to carry you, it's hard on the knees (which probably explains, among many other things, why mine are now shot).
The rollback is minimal on a modern lift: your weight is inconsequential compared to that of the seat+cable.
you're good man! but what did you do about the wolves??
shareUh.... so the guy in the movie shatters his legs, and you want to jump with skis on and "use the slope"... again, no. You would break your legs.
And jumping off a chair lift in real life is moronic and dangerous to everyone else on the lift. Don't ever do that. You can derail it.

If the slope had any angle to it for any upper intermediate skier this would have been easy. I've flown off big moguls landing 60 ft down slope skiing at 50+ mph and I'm not an expert (a little crazy when young I admit). Dropping 50 ft onto soft snow wearing skis heading down slope would have been a rush for anyone but a wuss, in which case you don't ski the big slopes. I remember the first time I took a big slope. It was at Waterville Valley New Hampshire. This was the World Cup Downhill Slope and the week before the World Cup. I stood in line in back of Jean Claude Kiley. When I got to the top and looked down, it looked as if it was a cliff. I stood up at the top for 15 minutes thinking what have I done. A member of the French ski team came over and talked with me, When he knew I could handle the hill he told me to follow him down. After that first trip, I made 10 more each time going faster. By the end of the day, I was taking the slope in full tuck and rather then skiing around the big moguls taking them head on at full speed. Closest thing to flying I've ever felt. Fear is powerful but so is confidence. The worst part of skiing was sharing slopes with over confident amateurs. A good ski patrol will detect a skier in trouble PDQ and get him off a big slope where he's more of a danger to the good skiers then he is to himself. Dropping 40 to 50 ft on a steep slope wearing a pair of skis would provide a hell of a rush for anyone knowing ho to ski (I wouldn't recommend this in icy conditions).
shareSki jumping is even done at the Winter Olympics, so it can be done without breaking your legs.
shareI personally wouldn't have jumped legs freaking first into the mountain. I mean, good lord. That is just not smart. He kind of had that coming. I thought he kind of went ass first from the camera angle, but then I realized, oops, nope, he went feet first into snow that is basically like hitting concrete. Good job, champ.
sharelol! :D
shareactually, he just had the misfortune to land on an ice spot, it was shown when he landed. He threw his board down first and it landed in soft snow. so he jumped thinking not much would happen to him.

Wrap the ski pole around the cable, hold onto the ends of the pole and slide down the cable to the next tower.
shareWell I would have waited till the morning & did exactly what the guy did climb down the cable & climb down the ladder but I would have *beep* up those wolves & not got eaten in about 5 minutes like he did .
shareFirst, I would have waited till morning to size up my options. But when the sun rose and I realized that my options were pretty slim, I think I would have convinced everyone to strip, use the clothing as a rope and shimmied to the ground. They could then pull the "rope" back up and redress and I'd hightail it down the mountain for help.
shareAbsolutely what I would have thought too.
Not sure I'd have waited until morning when there was a chance (realistically) of freezing to death during the night.
Reduce the distance to the ground with a 'rope' and drop, bend the knees and roll on impact.
Of course, there wouldn't be wolves hunting humans in a ski resort, but if I'd seen this risk beforehand, I'd fashion defensive spears from the many branches and rocks around.
Not bad mouthing the film though, as I liked it.
I would have tied up clothes and made a rope, 3 jackers, scarfs, verious straps and what not, maybe even use pants, climbed as far down as possible on the "rope" and jumped rest of the way.
avoiding the man eating killer wolfs would be another thing :P
Yup, would have tried the same thing. About the wolves, that part is completely unrealistic anyway, there wouldn't have been any wolves - and if there HAD been wolves, you'd very likely have been able to chase them off.
shareThis is why I always wear a paracord bracelet. The rope it's made from can old 550 lbs. I could untie it and use the rope to do just about anything. This would be a perfect situation where it would make an excellent climbing rope to climb down.
sharetotally agree!
even if you only had enough clothes-rope to decrease the fall by 10 or 15 feet, that's a big reduction of your impact!
It was not a feel-good movie, but interesting. This and "Open Water 2" really make you think about 'what would I do?'

I really want to see Open Water 1 and 2. Which is better? I'm kind of afraid I'll be scared even more because the thought of being in open water like that in the ocean kind of freaks me out. lol But I might give the movie a shot!
sharehey rev,
in terms of suspense and terror, I think Open Water 1 was far better.
in terms of 'what would i do?', the second one.
The couple in OW1 were sort of in a REALLY bad position from the outset. The group of folks in OW2 seemingly could have improved their state if they'd tried a few things, and kept their wits. (I'm trying not to give away too much)
Either one is worth a couple of hour's worth of commitment. Not great or even especially good, but entertaining.

Thanks so much for your input! They both sound good in different ways. I do enjoy these types of one-location movies that make you think "what would you do?"
If you haven't seen it, I recommend 247 Degrees. The group of people are stuck in a home-made sauna. I really, really enjoyed that movie because in a way it felt oddly realistic and was well-paced in my opinion.
Anyway, I'll have to check the movies out and I'll let you know what I think! :)
yeah! this was exactly my idea too.
shareIt was really interesting to see what the characters would do in that horrible situation. The rope idea came into my mind, too. I don't think that I would have the courage to jump or ruin my hands on the cable. Maybe I would just sit there and wait for death...
shareAbsolutely. The clothes as rope idea would have been the first idea to cross my mind.
shareI like your option !
shareI agree with the clothes rope option and it's been discussed a lot. Heck, even being naked and using the bra and underwear would help! Bras are pretty durable after all. Anything to make the jump less high would make more sense than what that guy did. I'm afraid of heights so I never would've willingly jumped like that. I'd have to have a rope ladder of some sort to go down to at least make me feel somewhat better about the shorter jump. Couldn't they also have tied their skinniest pieces of clothing to their skis to make the "rope" even longer as the skis would make up a lot of the distance on the rope?
shareYour exactly right Chrishayes!! they should have waited till the morning, focuse on all three warming up until daylight and make a better decision like climb down the cable and climb down. making quick and unrational decision and that's what the outcome. I know we all say it now because were not in it. but you really have to look at it that way.
shareIf you identify the alpha male and kill him the others will flee.
shareAccording to the director, people at the ski resort demonstrated sliding down the wire with a steel cable. The cable split in half. I don't think the ski pole could withstand what a steel cable couldn't.
sharefrom the moment they got stuck, this was what i was hoping one of them would be clever enough to suggest... even if they had dropped the ski poles, one of them could have wrapped arms and legs onto the cable to distribute their weight (so as not to cut themselves badly or slip) and shimmy down it safely.
shareI was wondering about the ski pole option. I'd definitely attempt to slide down the cable rather than moving up the cable, that's for sure. But I can't quite remember, weren't they at a spot where they were kind of dipped downwards so that both going forward and going backward across the cable was an uphill battle? I seem to remember that was part of their dilemma. So, they chose to go the back way because it was the fastest way to the nearest pole with a ladder on it...
shareI would climb down the cable with both hands AND LEGS, just like any person with a brain would do.
shareTried the cable WAY before trying the jump; which was just asking to die. If the ladder on the post was so close you could clearly see AND you could stop in the next closest lift chair to regain your strength, there's no way I'd jump.
shareI would have just stayed in the seat and pray I made it til Friday bc more than likely someone comes on Friday to prep for the weekend opening. I don't have enough upper body strength to make it across the cables plus with the cables being so sharp it's ripping through thick gloves...not a good combination. I would not let anyone jump.
I'm with 'pt-magi'. I was thinking from the moment the lift stopped, if they all take their jackets off, along with her scarf and maybe a shirt thrown in, they could have cut a nice chunk of height off the fall and not have to break their damn legs.
I also thought they could have used a ski or snowboard and used that to shimmy across the metal cabel and wouldn't have to tear up their hands.
I also thought she should have offered to take off her beanie and other glove to give to Lynch, so he wouldn't cut his hands so much, but no.
I think things could have been so much better if Dan hadn't jumped without thinking. Like a dumbass.
And in reality, I doubt the wolves would have continued to attack. Not even after Dan scared the first one away. They are more afraid of us then we are of them, and just because they smell blood doesn't mean they are going to eat you.
"I'm trying to see things from your point of view but I can't stick my head that far up my ass."
Your actually wrong about the wolves apparently that's exactly what the normally would do, my husband knew exactly what they were going to do it before they showed it. What they should have done was wait until the next day when it was light out and try to all three come together and stay warm through the night and do exactly what the dude did, climb on the cable line.
shareFirst of all I would have zipped my effing jacket up all the way instead of freezing my face off.
That annoyed me to no end
Same, I couldn't believe that the guy never put his hood on and neither one of them fully zipped their jackets.
Plus, wtf did she sleep with her hand on the bar or leave her hand exposed at all.
HA! Made ya look
This obviously was a plot wanted detail cause actors must be recognized by their faces in the movie... not be hidden by jackets..
Honestly, I would have jumped.....and therefore I would have broken my legs. Just like the guy who jumped, i would have assumed the snow would break my fall a bit or underestimate the distance and what would happen. This movie is so good because if followed every viewers thought pattern when it came to thinking of a solution...
Even after the movie, i dunno....the situation is pretty hopeless. The cable is razor sharp, in the movie the guy climbed across but in reality...after a day or 2 in that freezing weather, i dunno if you would be able to make that distance. Looked like the best situation may have been to wait until morning and climb over. Wolves were attracted to the area by the blood so if it wasn't for that, they may have been okay if someone made it down.
The characters could have at least zipped up their jackets before sleeping to make it slightly more plausible. I didn't mind the hand on the bar as much because she may have moved her hand while asleep.
shareI would jump down (commando pro) on to a wolfs back, killing it, I would then show all its friends and say "thats just a sample!" or just avoid the whole situation by not skiing or snowboarding.
shareI would have jumped down, tried to land on a wolf. Then I'd ride that wolf all the way to Mexico - and freedom!
www.igloooftheuncanny.blogspot.com
I'd have ridden that chick in the swing beside me to keep warm, then use our jackets tied together to shorten the fall to ground in the morning.
oh, then I'd ride her some more in the bushes nearby.
Commando pro...lmao!!
shareThey had their chance and blew it. All they had to do is throw their skis at the guy in the snowtruck. Aim for the windshield.
As for jumping, the best way to land is like a paratrooper....
"While landing under a parachute canopy, the jumper's feet strike the ground first and, immediately, he throws himself sideways to distribute the landing shock sequentially along five points of body contact with the ground:
the balls of the feet
the side of the calf
the side of the thigh
the side of the hip, or buttocks
the side of the back (latissimus dorsi muscle)"
Look up "Parachute landing fall" on wikipedia.
[deleted]
If done effectively the tucked head will not contact the ground as you roll along your shoulders and back. Also, rolling down with the decline of the ski trail would lessen the impact.
shareJack, were you an airborne soldier?
share[deleted]
AgMoist, of course the skier would fall faster than a paratrooper. But falling using this method would be less damaging than not using this method.
A paratrooper would be hurt if he didn't use this method, because paratroopers fall faster than recreational parachuters. Army parachutes did not have a lever that slows down the parachuter right before landing. Recreational parachutes do have it. The point is that paratroopers fall faster than you think they do.
[deleted]
In that case, you should write the Army to suggest that they change their landing method. Who cares if they have been doing it their way for almost a century with very few head injuries.
Of course a skier is going to get hurt jumping without a parachute. I never said they wouldn't. I said they would be hurt LESS if they were to land like a paratrooper.
Putting all the landing force on your lower body could give you a crippling spinal cord injury.

Army helmets do not absorb shock, genius. Their one purpose is to block mild shrapnel. Paratroopers don't hit their heads when they land.
Your logic is that decreasing shock by rolling only makes sense when you have a parachute. You're wrong. Decreasing shock by rolling makes sense ESPECIALLY when you do NOT have a parachute.
If you can avoid hitting your head at medium speeds by rolling, then you can avoid hitting your head at high speeds by rolling.
You should watch Parkour videos on You Tube. They jump from high distances and they always roll to decrease shock. They never just plant their feet when they land.
Either use a ski to slide down the cable, or create a rope using clothing, skis, and other equipment.
If I HAD to jump (no other viable options) here are some things I'd keep in mind:
1) Jump off the side, and towards the treeline or at least away from the center of the slope. You want to avoid groomed snow, and if you're close enough to trees you might be able to grab one on your way down.
2) Land on my ass or side and roll as soon as I hit the ground.
3) I'd probably take off the ski boots (from experience they'd make your fall harder).
4) Through down as much loose clothing as I could spare first to make the landing slightly more cushioned, then of course put it back on when I get down.
