Welp, this was silly. Here's how a smart person would have done it

If anyone has a metal hook, you could just secure it on your belt, then wrap someone else's belt over the cable and on the hook, and down you go.

Course the cable is all razor sharp so the belt could break. In that case just add more things to the hook, like the goggles they were wearing. Or you could make sure that the part of the belt that's scraping on the cable is the beltbuckle.

Before you say 'But they didn't have a metal hook!', no. Even if you don't have a certified safety hook on you, you could still improvise one. Their ski boots are full of hooks.

The worst part would be the wolves. I think if two people can get down, they can fight them off.

The second person would get down very easily, even easier than the first person. Climb on to the cable as if you were hugging the cable. Then tie your belt on the cable (still on you). Then shimmy along, still in a monkey sort of hugging position. You can use your legs and boots to push forward and your hands will be fine.

Then they both fight off the wolves with the skiing gear. Maybe I'm underestimating how strong 5 wolves can be, but I think two grown men could handle it. Once the wolves realize their prey is stronger than them, they'll run away. It's not like they'd have to kill all 5 wolves. It's just a power struggle.

Then they make a safety net with their clothes, and the 3rd person can jump down easily.

There you go, all three of them safe, no wolves. This took me 20min to come up with, tops.

if the smart thing is done then we have no movie

I found myself cheering for the wolves and the snow.

Go wolves! Yeah snow!

I've watched some major wastes of time. This is one of the top 2.

Sad story. You got a smoke?

Best comment I've read so far.

You've obviously never seen the movie The Grey. Them wolves don't just give up when they're hungry. They will eat, or they will die trying to eat.

reply

Yeah well the wolves weren't very bright to begin with. Where were they when there was plenty of food around just a few hours before. People breaking legs and the younger ones were just itchin' to be eaten. Wandering around after hours makes them seem more like coyotes. jk

reply

They'd have to be starving and desperate to go after something that is or can cause great harm. A predator needs to be able to hunt and to be able to hunt they need to be healthy, whole, and able to move quickly. If something proves to risky, they'll move on to other prey.

Ever notice how it takes two hands to fasten a belt? That kind of precludes any type of belt finagling scenario when your arms and legs are desperately clutched around a ski lift cable for dear life.

"Then they make a safety net with their clothes, and the 3rd person can jump down easily."

LMAO. Good luck.

I love how people talk crap about a film like they know for a fact they would have done things differently.

Well yes, the OP is a complete idiot!

I see Stupid People...

cheers to that!

You're definitely underestimating wolves. Is it possible for them to fight/scare them off, yes. Is it likely, no. There is a reason they are smart and hunt in packs.

Just take one of the ski, grab on both side really close so you dont put too much pressure on the material and slide down the cable.

Still you are wrong about the wolves, no way the tree of them could fight them off if they didnt give up. Unless you have proper martial arts training and are pretty fit you have no chance unarmed.

Best way is to slide to the pole and wait as long as it takes for the wolves to go away.

2 Jackets, 2 ski pants, sweat shirts, regular pants...they have at least 50ft of clothing. Carefully take it off and tie it together as a rope. 1 person climbs down. The other person pulls the rope back up and puts their clothes back on and drops down the clothes for the climber. The second person skis down the hill and either starts up the lift or grabs the snowmobile and emergency rescue rope kit...
Also there were bungie cords holding the seat cover on...probably 20 feet worth...
I jumped from a lift once on a bet....Snow was soft enough...I skied right down the hill...

Why do some people bring up this idea and threat it like some genius plan? It's a totally stupid and bad idea.

It's not easy to tie the clothes they were wearing because of the material they're made of, not to mention the length etc. We're not talking about bed sheets here or something.
Even if they do manage somehow to magically tie them together who says that "rope" would be strong enough to hold them, it can very easily untie.

Guess what happens then? You fall, break some bones and if you survive the fall you'll simply freeze faster because you don't have your clothes and since the clothes fell with you because they untied your friends will freeze faster as well.

reply

Not only that, for the entire length of your "plan" you'll be bare ass naked on a snowy mountainside at night. You would freeze within minutes.

reply

It'd be cold, but you'd be busy. As long as you're dry, you'd easily have plenty of time to climb down. You can rip most cotton stitched garments apart with your bare hands, and tear cottons and wools with something simple like a key. I'd be happily making a big old rope instead of sitting there shivering.

reply

If the first thing that came to my mind too , after watching the movie. I am not even close to a skier, but my children are, and the ski clothes are more than clothes for a day in the snow, you wear something thermo inside that keeps you warm, and the pants and jackets tied together could be strong, it may sound ridiculous and it probably wont be enough long, or simply use some of the clothes to make a kind of security to help to cross the cable, if three are going skiing at least someone most have skills to to that, and finally some clothes for skiing comes with recco system, and they didn't have phones?? since the cell phones are existing they mean comunication & security, this happened in which year ??? lol, well I know, its a movie, and we always know it better.

reply

You couldn't tie those clothes into a knot and even if you somehow magically done it you would be freezing much faster without clothes.

So what if they didn't had phones? Stuff like this actually happened in real life, so I guess reality is unrealistic?

reply

First off, I would have waited till day light before attempting to get down. In the mean time, huddle up with one another to keep warm. At day break, take the ski pole and throw it over the cable, place hands on either end of ski pole and slide down the cable. Once I got to the lift pole, climb down, keeping the ski pole with me and get help. You could even use one of the skies as well.

reply

Why do you think the ski pole would be hard or stable enough to let you slide perfectly there?

reply

In life there are a bunch of less than intelligent people. These were portrayals of them. If you want a movie about people that do about 70-95% of things right, you don't got a lot of pickings.

Pretend something pithy is here.
