I don't understand (Spoiler)

All but one decided to swim for land, which was probably a mistake in reality. But my point is, if they were going to swim to the island, why weren't they ever shown swimming. I know they would get tired and take breaks, but I think the director should have included scenes of them actually swimming instead of staying afloat out in the ocean. It would have just been more realistic. Because you would be swimming every moment your body would let you to get out of that scenario.

They were swimming -- they held the floats with their hands and paddled underwater with their feet, to make the trip easier and less tiring.

From what I have read, there was no specific real event that this is based on. That should not surprise anyone. Way too dramatic at times. It's likely based on several different stories.

I just really wish they didn't have the text at the end, that took the movie down a couple of points in my view. I'd rather they have ended with ambiguity.

You did just fine, Clarence. Now go git yo'self some hot cornbread!

It is based on a true story. The ship was called the New Venture, off the coast of Townsville, Australia. Try googling "new venture" + Townsville + shark.

Welcome to Costco, I love you...

I did and it seems like it is very loosely based on that incident. It was a trawler. There was no person left and only three people. The love story and all that is nonsense. Although that incident does sound pretty interesting, especially at the end.

They showed them swimming a little bit. But even right as they left the boat it was just a half hearted lollygag of a swim. They never would have gotten there swimming lazily and stopping every 2 minutes afraid of shadows. There were probably 10 large sharks in their area. What good is looking at them all the time going to do? They are curious animals and would check them out possibly. And the one guy who knows the area is all paranoid weird about the whole thing. Overall fairly stupid people and a fairly annoying movie. As I get older, the idea that we are killing so many amazing creatures.

Here's what people who are around these awesome animals think of them, they go out of their way to see them...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-LIiVjdjwU

I'd rather watch that on an endless loop than than this silly movie again.

Another person loving on sharks making humans out to be the bad guys... UGH! I'm sick of that. Yes, sharks are fascinating. Yes, some species are quite remarkable. Don't get me wrong, sharks are my a favorite animals. I'm very interested in them.

But I also understand that they are extremely dangerous. Wanna know why it might get curious and come check you out? Cause you might be food!!!!! Sharks aren't playful. Sharks aren't cuddly.

I'm not saying sharks are evil... I'm just saying, they're not man's best friend.

On a side note, wouldn't it be kinda fun to watch these animal-rights activists swim in open water with some of these sharks? "Quit freaking out, they're not bad. They're just... curious." LOL!

They are quite curious. One of the problems, though, for people in the water, is that sharks tell best what a thing actually is by biting it. If they don't like the taste they just spit it out (and generally they don't like the taste of humans), and if they lose a tooth or two it just gets replaced. But meantime, the thing they've bitten has probably died.

And you don't have to be an animal-rights activist to know that, generally, sharks don't like the taste of humans. We're not their favourite food. But as Warren pointed out in the film, a human in a black wetsuit looks like a seal. And sharks really like munching on seals.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

Hence why I said they are "dangerous." ;)

This one seemed to enjoy it.

I thought that was a pretty believable reaction from someone who's stranded in the middle of the ocean surrounded by sharks!

I've always felt that, from the moment the boat sinks and they are all sitting on the up-turned hull, Luke basically knows that they are screwed. Everything he does from that point on is about trying to give the others some hope. But deep down, he knows they are 99% likely to die.
