I completely agree with you. It was simple, realistic and very suspenseful. I was biting my nails all throughout the movie. A stalker great white is frigging creepy!
Yes, I found myself thinking pretty much the same thing while watching this. There was something about this film that was very compelling to watch. I liked the fact that there were long periods of silence as each character was dealing with their own inner dialogue and fear. Very strong performances from all the actors... and the shark.
Personally, I'd say it's the best shark film since Jaws 2. There's no denying the atmosphere and thrills here, and I loved the real shark footage; I just wish the first half of the film was stronger in character development. This is just my opinion.
Agreed. Suspensful, well-acted & directed, frightening, etc. Looking forward to the director's upcoming work, he's made 2 pretty thrilling films so far.
I agree with lightning bellz... Jaws 2 was not a bad flick, no Jaws, but not bad, and this comes right after in my book. I was pretty impressed with this.
But I thought Open Water was pretty good two... for what it was.
The Reef was pretty impressive. While the first half was a little bland (some of the character development was rather cliche, and the male lead was stoically wooden throughout), the second half was very well-done.
At the point when the four leads are in the water and swimming the film definitely kicked into gear. Once the shark finally appears, it became unbearably tense. Afterward, my muscles were literally sore from being clenched for about 30 straight minutes.
All in all, I'd agree that this is the scariest shark movie since Jaws (although it's not as "enjoyable" as Deep Blue Sea). My only complaint would be the "blah" acting of the male lead (he didn't convey emotion very well, and never seemed to panic when the shark was around)....everyone else was very expressive and felt like real people. The cinematography and editing were spot on, and the combination of suspense and shocks were very well-done.
After both Black Water and now The Reef, I think this director is one to watch.
Oh yes it was! I just saw it and I don't want to get back in the water :/ The lamest shark movie ever made is sand sharks...in fact IMHO it is the lamest movie EVER made
I can't believe how good this film was. I run an independent movie store and we had a customer rent it and rave about it. I looked it up on here and seeing the 5.7, wasn't too sure. But my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.
I thought the acting was excellent, not one thing to complain about. The build up to the attacks are the real thing of art though, such great directing to keep the audience gasping.
I gave this film an 8/10, which is high praise considering I see so many films. A winner!
Agreed. This film was quite tense, riveting, and suspenseful. Moreover, the fact that everything that occured was within the realm of possibility gave this film an extra potent and terrifying impact.
I'd never heard of it and recorded it because I like horrors and sharks - double whammy! I didn't expect much - but it literally had me on the edge of my seat - I had to keep pausing it to make myself more tea (a sure sign that I am enjoying what I'm watching) and the viewing actually ended up taking about four hours. I was so scared I had to keep stopping and doing housework to reassure myself - another sure sign.
Overall I thought it was quite outstanding, and I think it is fair to say that it is up there with 'Jaws'.
I thought Deep Blue Sea was better, it wasn't a one hour compilation of people looking around, panicking, Luke putting on his goggles, and eyeball shots.
