What would YOU do??

Swim or stay on the boat? I would have stayed on the boat, especially after the fisherman said there is no way he would get in the water because he knows what in there and his comment about putting on a wetsuit makes you look like a seal. So true!
Why didn't they try to find supplies still in the boat to perhaps fix it? At least there was some food and tools in there.
What happened to the little raft? Maybe they could of patched it, but then again it's not much protection from the huge shark. Perhaps there were weapons or a harpoon they could of taken with them. It had a motor on it so it would of been alot faster then trying to swim for it.
They should have tried to swim faster when they first started swimming. They were just treading water than really swimming. They could have swam fast until they tired and then rest and tread water before swimming again.
Luke was wrong, Turtle Island was no where to be seen, just some small reefs.
I definately would have stayed put on that upturned boat!
How about you? What would do?

Staying on the boat was the only real choice.

First, even with no current at all, 10 miles is a very long way to swim. Think like this, one mile is about 1610 meters. A standard pool is 25 meters long. That means you would have to swim over 64 laps to just go one mile; meaning that even if you swam in a perfect 10 miles, you are looking at 640 laps in a regular pool.

Next, going in a straight line over long distances is very difficult on land, almost impossible on water. Just being a degree or two off, over 10 miles, would mean they would NEVER see the island.

Unless they had a much better means of floating (I have read that the 'real' people about whom this story is based were able to make a sort of raft with the debris), the chances of swimming to the island is almost zero.

Better to make the best of staying on the boat.

I thought something was said about the tide was taking the boat out farther into the ocean away from land. Inferring that they'd become a smaller and smaller speck that would never be found. Instead of sitting on a boat and fading into nothing-ness, the other option was to take action and move towards land. Anyone who stayed on the boat was only doing so in the hopes that the others would reach help and then send it in their direction.

i wouldnt go on a boat or swim in the ocean in the first place...

People don't brain storm in these movies.

Raft would be a good idea if it could be done, or try and make pedals to move the boat to land.

If you have to swim, make long trange weapons and spears that everyone has sticking out as you swim,, you may be able to stab the shark.

It did say at the end of the movie that the boat and passenger left behind were never found. So the safest option was to go into the water where at least one person was saved.

The reality is that these folks would have never found the island that eventually saved one of them. The swim was way too far (as I explained earlier) and over the course of the swim, even moving a few degrees off course would have put them in a place where they would never have found the island. Combine that with the fact a shark found them and ate 3 of them (almost the fourth) and even the movie shows that was a bad idea.

In real life, staying with a floating boat will always be a better choice unless you can clearly see land.

i would have asked the girls to flash their tits. somebody would turn up then. hohoho!

you have to base your choice on probabilities, in real life, excluding the event it's based on, you probably wouldn't all get eaten by shark's.
Staying on the boat is not an option as the likelihood of it being discovered is non-existent.
the biggest risk is swimming and not finding land, thus drowning from exhaustion.
Statistically though , there best option was to swim , still a low chance of survival but better than waiting on the boat.

So the best chance of survival is leaving but with better preparation in what you take with you.

Had it been reasonably close to land and I had the knowledge to swim to land? Swimming easy. These morons died because they were thrashing about doing everything in their capacity to attract sharks.

All of them were Darwin awards. I'm glad the dork that survived never got pregnant from said male dork.
