I'm sure the first time I watched this film they all died. Is there an alternate ending where this happens? I'm not confusing it with Open Water but was there another film like this (also not Open Water 2) that came out around the same time I'm getting this film confused with?

No there was just the one ending. Being a true story there was only one way the film could end.
Actually the ending they filmed was not how things went down. The guy was the survivor in real life, and I think he was also alone.
The abysmal, AWFUL ending was added because of 'focus groups', who could all go die in a fire because they had them make the kind of ending that makes a movie unwatchable after seeing it.
