Why is most of the cast black?
Seems like of racist
shareBecause it's Disney and skin color means everything even for voice actors.
shareForget about race. Most of the cast are also hardcore liberals (Beyonce, Seth Rogen, Billy Eicher, Kevin Harrison)
shareIt's set in Africa. How is that exactly racist?
It would be like remaking Mulan and complaining that the actors are Chinese.
Honestly, why do people care so much? Do you like the movie? Is the story good? Who cares what actors' political/religious views are. Years ago, nobody cared about that. I miss coming to the message boards for new movies and talking about the actually movie and characters, not about what actors' real-life views are. I thought the movie was really good and cute.
Mulan has Chinese human characters.
Not animals.
Black Westerners aren't from Africa. They might not have any personal connection to the continent or have even been there. It is kind of racist and definitely unnecessary. If it's required that they are "African" in some way, surely they should all be doing African accents. Having a lion voiced by a British or American actor because he's black is just weird.
"It would be like remaking Mulan and complaining that the actors are Chinese."
If they're actually from China, no it wouldn't. It would make sense, as they would sound Chinese.

Funny how that doesn't apply to films set in Europe.
shareBecause it takes place in Africa.
And everyone knows African animals are black.
D’uh.
Pumbaa's played by Seth Rogan though. Most African animals are black, but warthogs, meerkats and a few lions are white. It all makes perfect sense.
I suspect the mostly black cast is just cover for accusations of cultural appropriation or something similarly stupid. Ditto the director - unless someone thought the guy who made Moonlight would be ideal for a CGI movie about lions.
Studios get brownie points for hiring people of color.
