Tarr's last film?

To what extent has it been substantiated that this will be Tarr's last film? There's no mention of it in the Werc Werk Works press release. IonCinema and Cineuropa both claimed it's set to be his last film, but didn't cite any sources.

Has anyone else read the Cahiers du Cinema article referred to in the above-linked thread? It seems likely it's the source of this rumour, and it'd be nice to know what the tone and form of his comment was so I can interpret it for myself.

i've watched a Q&A with him last autumn where he said it would be his last film as director, he will keep producing films for others and work as a mentor for younger directors.

haha, poor bela...making films like his in today's industry must be a hell of a struggle. i think i can understand why he decided to stop, and let the young take some sh!t :)

I guess Cannes can be considered a sellout festival that doesn't care about film makers that contribute to the art form anymore.

But you know, Tarr is not the only filmmaker who contributes to art form.

I heard that people in the Hungarian government that deal with new movies, demanded that movies should be made with a 'light, happy touch', so as to boost morale or something. Consequently, A Turin Horse was not distributed in Hungary (so I've heard). Seems that pre-1989 censorship has made a comeback... Poor Béla.

The issue is that Bela spoke out against the censorship and the government responded by banning the Hungarian premiere of his film. Nice people in charge there. The film academics had a swipe back at the govt. attack on Tarr though by submitting Turin Horse as the official submission from Hungary for the "foreign film" Oscar. The govt. has no say in that.

Hopefully it is the latest.

Exactly. That's why it took him so many years to finish both Werckmeister Harmonies and The Man from London.

hmmm..it's his latest but it really looks like he's closing up shop. I think he said he's said everything that he's wanted to say. Anyway, I don't know Bela's politics as such but I'd like to have a cup o coffee with him and gets his take on '56 in light of where his country is today.

I was at a screening of The Turin Horse this afternoon and he said he doesn't want to make any more films.

He certainly chose the right movie to end his career with, symbolic wise.

This is the first and only movie I've seen by him and it inspired me to watch every one he has done.
