Imdb Ratings
When I gave this film a 9, I looked up the ratings-distribution...
:O
I've never seen so much agreement on fellow movie watchers! :)

Something's fishy about it!
'9' votes overwhelm all the rest combined 2:1 - huh? That can't be right. For a movie that only had Europe-wide theatrical release and only a single festival release in the US, it's unlikely to have twice as many US votes than the rest of the world combined. Say what? The icing on the cake however is that there are 1166 '9' votes overall (world-wide incl. US), and the US voters rating average, based on 1092 votes, is exactly 9.0.
Um yeah. It's like someone simply added 1000 '9' votes under US IP. I mean it looks 100% like it! :)
Hmm, you may be on to something here, if you look at all the different age and gender votes, they all have a majority of '9' voters, except the under 18-votes. Fishy indeed. No complaints from me though :) this movie needs all the support it can get. I heard that a US release is planned, so the '1' voter-army will be ready when it does... :(

Not too long ago the movie had low 7ish rating average... was surprised to see the 8.4 all of the sudden, that's why I checked the voting breakdown. By the looks of it this change questions the integrity the IMDB voting system... unless the hordes of American Tarr fans put their hands on a copy and honestly voted 9 - ALL OF THEM! :)
Anyways...
Tarr's exceptional film recently played at the New York and Chicago film festivals, so the rise in the rating should come as no surprise.
I can still see the opening scene and hear the organ playing. A brilliant film, even if it has put me off baked potatoes for a spell.
Yes! I by mistake repeated the same experiment on the Turkish series which have the 4th place or 6th place in IMDB ratings for tv shows ever made. Apparently some romantic sitcom somewhere outthere had as many viewers as HBO or something, unlikely? But also, the breakdowns are fishy - nobody seems to vote other than a 1 or a 9. There is like a 1000 votes all of them 9. why not an 8 or a 2?
sharethe film is good but ratings are obviously corrupted. good job imdb!
shareFirst of all, I hate to talk about movies that I don't like. Normaly I don't write anything when I dislike a movie but this one has high ratings and I don't know how.
This is not a movie. I tried to watch almost 2 hours but I turned it off. No messages, no intense moments, nothing special about the acting, nothing special about the direction, no script,no story, no characters, no nothing. I love single set movies and I also like minimalistic movies but this one was not entertaining at all. Seriously take your camera place it somewhere in your room and just sit there, eat, watch TV, go to the bathroom, sleep, do that everyday and Baaaaaaam you have your masterpiece.
If you watched "Intouchables 2011" (Best movie of the year, imo) try to remember the scene when Philippe sold the crap that Driss painted to ritch people for 15.000 Euro. Just because he told them it's good they gave 15.000 to buy it. Same thing here.

Best film of the year! You're nuts.

This is a very powerful film. The banal repititions have an accumalative effect that pays off big time in the final scene and phrase "you have to eat". Most films don't attach much importance to eating and therefor don't spend much time on it. But what can be more important than eating? Tarr attaches great importance to it by focusing on it. His value judgements are spot on in illuminating certain aspects of the human condition. Like the howling wind outside it strips away humanity down to its barest essentials. The characters exist as well as the film and nothing more. It's a very potent distillation of themes he explored in his other films - much like a shot of brandy. He takes one theme and expands upon it to make it more universal. What makes this film great for me is that it has both a uniquely cinematic vision as well as a distinct vision of the human condition. Very few films have both. At least we agree on the opening scene - one of the great dolly/tracking shots ever put on film.
Correction: best film that I've seen thus far this decade. You've seen more than me. I plan to see A Seperation tomorrow as well as A Dangerous Method. Loved Tree of Life, Melancholia, and Take shelter. La Quatro Volte is another gem you probably wouldn't like. I admit this film is not for everyone.
It really has EVERYTHING to do with what people want in their movie 'experience'. This kind of film would not appeal to me in ANY way -even if it were free, I'd take a pass. I'm not trying to put it down, just pointing out that since it isn't MY kind of film, I wouldn't bother -if I were to see it, I'd be bitterly disappointed and the rating would reflect it.
I don't rate a movie as 'good' simply because its foreign-made or because it is supposed to be 'transcendental' or some other nebulous 'trendy' or 'snob' term.
Now, if that is the kind of thing you like, and you see the film -and it is exactly what you want, then you would certainly be right to give it a high rating. There is nothing wrong with that. After all, if we all liked the same thing, there wouldn't be any point in making different types of movies.
This one clearly isn't targeting a very wide range of viewers.
Even a cursory glance at the description is enough to show that.
Would it do well with a wide distribution (thousands of screens etc) ? No, not likely -which is also why it isn't presented as such.
Again, there is nothing wrong with that.
No messages, no intense moments, nothing special about the acting, nothing special about the direction, no script,no story, no characters, no nothing. This, simply, is not true. My experience watching the film was intense as it required of me a lot of commitment. The film replaces dialogue with symbolism and there are plenty of messages in the actions of the two main characters, as there is in the very sparing dialogue. Perhaps there's nothing special in the acting although being able to maintain such emotionless and deadpan delivery throughout requires a discipline of a kind. The direction was similarly disciplined and many shots were like beautiful photos with superb black and white photography and very controlled long shots that moved almost imperceptibly. The choice of the director to show the same repeating behaviours over several days but shot from different perspectives suggests an intelligence in the directing. The opening scene where the man is driving the horse home through mist and wind was incredibly atmospheric and would not be out of place in many a fine horror film.

In the shape of a girl
I know I'm responding to a message from October 2011 but the film has only now been playing in Boston's Museum of Fine Arts. I rarely see a film twice but I had to see "The Turin Horse" again.
Anytime an artist like Tarr does something radical and different there's always detractors. As far as I'm concerned it's a masterpiece 10/10.
I can understand both points of view on this, it was beautifully crafted, and was truely art. But I felt it lacked the depth it was claiming to have and while I am glad I have seen it, I certianly wouldnt watch it a second time. At least not without my finger on the fast forward button. The neighbours visit was the scene with the a bit of depth and even that came over as preachy.
shareJust as in most all of the Wong Kar-Wai films I have seen, one can conveniently be dismissive with the jaundiced view that "nothing happens." But the "ah-ha! moment" is in how deftly played the narrative is, how we are creatures bound and entrenched by our routines. Films such as these are not content in making the audience as aloof observer, but an actual participant - that is, if the spell manages to creep in and stick with ya.
"POWER TO THE PEOPLE WHO PUNISH BAD CINEMA!!!"
Here's a hint: for all but the greatest movies (movies with more 10 votes than any other rating), the ratio of 10 votes to 9 votes tells you the sophistication of the audience. The more movies the audience has seen, the more reluctant they are to give a 10.
Compare this movie to a Twilight flick.
