The Next 'Ed Wood' ?

Is it possible that James Nguyen is this generation's Ed Wood? That quality of raw talent and genius has until now been unmatched. I can't wait for James Nguyen's next film and I hope it as truly awful as his first; then we will know!

reply

It is completely possible. Now that you mention it, the dialogue and the editing in this film really reminds me of Plan 9. The birds are our generation's version of the plastic UFOs on a strong gimmick in Plan 9 as well.

I'm just watching this right now for the first time and I'm blown away by how atrocious the editing, dialogue, EVERYTHING is!

reply

'Birdemic' is actually James Nguyen's third film...

reply

Oh My...so it is. Since I can't get them in Thailand, any idea how bad the other 2 are?

reply

These are the plots for his two other films.

Replica - "Suffering from kidney failure, Joe, a computer chip salesman goes through an organ transplant"

Julie and Jack - "Jack Livingston is looking for true love. He is a successful computer chip salesman"

OK.

reply

Hehe, I see a recurring theme there.

reply

This generation has MANY Ed Woods.

reply

Has James Nguyen got a panache for a woman's clothing?

Nah, I don't think he's an Ed Wood... Ed Wood had a calling for what he did - Nguyen is just caught up in bad transwation.

reply

It is possible. He's very proud of it and doesn't know why people are laughing. He tried to sell it to Sundance because he thought it was that good. He's kind of a wannabe, you'll see if you check his Twitter. But optimism doesn't hurt.

reply

"Is it possible that James Nguyen is this generation's Ed Wood?"

No.

reply

in a way yes...

I hear he's making a Birdemic Two

hopefuilly he can afford professional sound recorders and editors- bird 1 seemed like a bad HS Tv class project

and real 3D artists...

then again---
if Birdemic 2 is professionally produced- whats to laugh at?

Does he NOT KNOW people are laughing at it?

reply

then again- ALL of Ed Woods films had semi professional sound and picture quality...

reply

The only reason the public noticed 'Birdemic' existed was because of its unintentionally laughably bad qualities. James Nguyen has come to realize that and Severin Films certainly realizes that. There's no doubt that a sequel will be made only to profit off the same thing: they're going to INtentionally try to make it just as bad (if not worse) than the original in the hopes of making lightening strike twice. Why else would they make a sequel (and with the same cast)?

Alas, it'll inevitably fail. The charm of 'Birdemic' (and Ed Wood's films) was in its earnest amateurishness. When you intentionally try to make a bad film, its just phony and pointless. I'm having horrible flashbacks to 'Hobgoblins 2'...

There was something bizarrely charming about Ed Wood's films, that's why they're remembered. They're entertaining and therefore they succeed in some capacity.

This *beep* was just soul-destroying, unrelentingly awful crap.
