Alternative energy/fuel. I mean, come on, the film itself is pure *beep* but it's obvious that the message here was the benefits of alternative energy. Does anyone agree?

Yes, the movie was about how if we keep treating nature the way we do, it may eventually try to take it's revenge upon us. It sorted of reminded me of films like Frogs, Piranha (original), etc. with nature striking back at humanity.
