Inspiring

This movie is actually quite inspiring. Any aspiring filmmaker can watch this and think, "I could do better than that with only 10 G's!" Because the problems here are less about Nguyen's technical limitations and more about his inability to work around them. You won't have your pick of great acting talent with 10 large, of course, but you can still write a good story and believable dialogue. You can frame shots correctly even if your camera is cheap, and you can edit things properly on your laptop. If you're on a tight budget, pick a story that doesn't rely on a lot of FX, and fashion the story around the shooting locations that are available to you in a way that makes sense (i.e. no outdoor picnic scenes in a killer bird flick). Creativity and ingenuity are free.

I hope some young, struggling, future Spielberg or Nolan walks away from this film with a real sense of determination to get out there and make some movie magic.

You are so right. A good movie is more than the budget that it takes to film it. Of course there are movies that can only be done with a rather large budget. But, there are plenty of things that can be done on a small budget with just a few sets. Going to small community theaters and seeing what they do with so little money and space could give people a great sense of what can be done on a shoe string.
