Just finished watching the film, after having it on my SKY planner for what felt like an eternity.
Loved the film.
Came to the board to see what other people had to say about it...and lo n behold, the board is full of homophobic morons.
Why do straight men get so uncomfortable seeing homosexuality on their TV screen?
For the record I'm straight, and have zero problems seeing gay themes and acts on my tellybox. Maybe I'm just confident of my sexuality.
Good for you, it's only a few randoms who do it for a rise out of people, stop congratulating yourself, there are very few homophobes here, I am not one of them, but there is no need to pat yourself on the back for being comfortable with this film, the rest of us are (7.5) and we feel no need to brag about it.

I love to watch good gay, romantic films about relationships between men. Movies like "Weekend" and "The Falls" are among my favorites. But this is dull, pretentious, and piss-elegant. That "classical" music alone made me want to retch. If anything, Firth's character seems to spend more time romancing the Julianne Moore pseudo-British drunk than he does his late, lamented boyfriend. I had to re-watch "Apartment Zero" to remind myself that Firth can play a convincing homosexual.

Not that this movie has much of any kind of sexual content. It is oddly asexual. Perhaps that is part of the undercurrent of the story, but it certainly skims over anything that might be confronting regarding gay sexuality.
Where this film goes 'off' has nothing to do with homosexuality. The sniffing of a stranger's dog...the lingering pan shot up a little girl's legs...the dog piss going all over a youngster's face and mouth. There is a creepiness to the lead character that is just strange. I can't think of a relevant, artistic, context that would justify this sort of material. If I didn't know better I might have thought the movie was made by a homophobe.
Despite this, I think this is a very good movie. The acting is superb. The writing is first rate (except for the objections already noted). The cinematography is brilliant. The soundtrack is gorgeous. The sets and design and costumes don't just capture a time and place, they create one of their own.
JacintoCupboard. I agree with most of what you say.Its 2 years later, I just watched it. I did not see an homophobic anything in the film. I saw it as a man, flawed as he might be, grieving for the love of his life after 16 years together. The music at the end was so beautiful..Ive seen a negative comment about the classical music, being a stereotype for gay men. Jeez. Come on.
The film was good, it was different. It had its weaker moments, but I stayed interested till the end. Just when he finally sees a glimmer, he extinguishes. Its a fine film.
