Who felt the Anna Diana story could had been better?
It's a sign that series does not quite hit the mark when it dosen't live to the idea of repreised roles. Anna was a cold and even a controlling sociapath, Morena Baccarin played the role with good conviction. Part of the problem for her character is that she was up against weak characters (that had weak development and motivation and poor script) Casulty of this was Jane Badler's Diana.
The orignal 1983 and 1984 final battle weren't perfect, but it did have the dark themes, action (and of course a certain Mr Ironside!) However the key aspect for me was that both the orignal and the final battle gave us was the sceming, power hungry and surprsingly brutal Diana. The 85 Tv series was forgetable, and never built on Diana's traits. However people do remember diana to how brazen she was from the 83-84 part.
So you could imagine how a Diana return could had been like. Anna returns to the central of her command checking on reports etc when she finds out there while she was absent she ship had recieved a visitor. Anna demands to know why she wasn't told and from the shadows comes diana in a suit perhaps similir to her militant uniform come from the shadows and rephrases her own quote about how those who wear the crown (Anna) are just the face of power, to which diana walks out. cliffhanger to the next season etc.
Instead, the show rather then hyping up a duel between a long arc struggle between two equal forces has the first intro of Diana stepping out of a cocoon in high heels and dress? (It looked unconvincing and no sense of the cocoon looking well, believable really)) And revert Diana to playing not even a diluted role but a more obi wan like, embrace emtions, we were wrong, let us all work togther and be all right.
Was that what they initally planned? It was as if whoever thought of this had the idea was 'let's just throw the name diana in that'll get people interested' That's not enough, even if played by the same person if you take away the key traits of what made people like that character (or why their famous for) then they might as well not be on the show.
I think it was a terrible arc of missed opportunites. No reunion with jane and marc singer is another missed opportunity (yes they are both different characters but who would miss that?) The idea that Diana was a captive on the ship and spent most time trapped in her cell only to be killed in public raises the question why was she alive at all if dispensed with no regard.
There are a lot of things the show went wrong with, the whole business suit and keeping everyone in 'human skin' as much as possible just made it another show like SG-1 Or star Trek. the alien is human has been saturated enough. The voice effect could had made a return that might had distinguished alieness.
In my eyes though the great sin was the failing to utilize Diana and Anna. Diana for not having her formidable traits from the past, schemeing, coy and cold ruthlessness return. And for Anna whose calm exterior and sociapthic nature would had been a good foil against the two. It felt to me the show wanted to revive Diana but as somewhat captive to Anna to show that Anna is a force to be reckoned but that meant nothing as none of the character traits of diana were really there and she had little use of her captive role.
Seeing these two characters trying to outdo each other, scheme and mainpulate earth's populace and the resistance would had been a more developed strain and then finally Anna finally removes Diana and is free with her own influnce. Though I might had ended it with Diana shocked before musing at her daughter's efforts, reminesient of her's from the days of 84 telling her she did well. Instead of being melodramatic 'you doomed us all'
it's a rant but more on a rant in my eyes in how the show did not utilize what they had.
