Why is the North American DVD release so late?

I understand that the KFP2 DVD is being released in the UK in November while North America's release is Dec 13. By comparison, Cars 2's DVD is coming out in Nov 1.

Does anyone know why North America's release for KFP2 is so late? Would it have anything to do with the Chinese New Year which is on January 23, 2011? China was the country where the film was the most successful outside of North America, so was this a factor?

Actually, in Switzerland (where I live) and Germany, it is released on October 27. I don't really get it either why it's released earlier here than in the UK or in the USA, since the cinematic release was one month later here. November okay, but DECEMBER? I've been waiting for this DVD since I saw this movie in cinema and can't wait to buy it next week, but if I had to wait until December while other countries already had a release... man that would piss me off.

My guess is it's because of Christmas. It's obvious that people buy more in December, which is probably why they delayed it. Kung Fu Panda 2 didn't perform as well as expected in the US Box office, as you probably know.

I though kung fu panda 2 did well in USA theaters.
Guess I was wrong, but I can definatly see this being a big christmas release

Well, it was a huge hit worldwide, being one of the 50 most successful films of all time. The domestic gross of 165 Million Dollars is good of course, compared to the 150 Million Budget. It just didn't do as well as other dreamworks productions like "How to Train your Dragon" (217 Million Dollars) or the first Kung Fu Panda movie (215 Million). That's probably because of movies like "Hangover 2", or "Pirates of the caribbean 4" that were released at the same time.

Worldwide though, this movie was a HUGE hit. Outside the USA, it actually made about as much money as "The Lion King" in those countries. And that's pretty impressive.

I'm quite curious about that notion, too. However, I hope the Europan Region will contain the same Bonus Features as the North American Region.

The american version will even have more content than the european Version. The american version contains a short film called Secrets of The Masters and a sneak peek episode of the upcoming TV series.

The U.S. release date does seem unfair, but as it's been said, it's probably because the holidays and the idea that it will help DVD/ Blu-Ray sales. DreamWorks appears to be having troubles, so they could probably use the profits. Also, the KFP series is premiering in November, and they might want that to be a highlight on its own for a while, then KFP 2 released a little later. But who really knows?

reply

Well that is completely idiotic by Dreamworks and it will backfire on them in the end I am sure. Giving the consumer only 12 days to purchase a Blu Ray/DVD for the holidays is a stupid move by them. Disney never releases major titles right before Christmas, in fact they releases Toy Story 3 on 11/2 last year and they released UP on 11/10 the year before and they both sold wonderfully. This is why Disney is a better studio than Dreamworks and I will be amused again by those idiots dropping the ball on this release. It is insulting for the North American consumer to be screwed over this badly by Dreamworks, I recommend whoever is insulted by this release date to go email them and tell them to go eat sh!t!

Critics are worthless, formulate your own opinion!

Waiting a month longer for a DVD may be frustrating, but seriously, it's not worth getting that upset about.

I just found out the reason why: Dreamworks Animation is releasing two new DVD short films of the How To Train Your Dragon franchise next week: Gift of the Night Fury and The Book of Dragons.

Obviously, DA didn't want to undermine the sales of either franchise by putting their releases too close together.
