It's an animated film, with its main audiences being kids. It's not really important as long as it's not too obviously wrong, for example penguins.
sharei can't believe people are still using the "it's only a movie" excuse ... the kung fu panda movies are obviously taking a lot care of getting the details right, so yeah, i though it was pretty strange to see gorillas, too.

And as has been pointed out Shen was in exile he may have brought the gorillas back from wherever he was in hiding

There are also no Rhinos or Crocodiles either, so what?.
shareActually there are asian rhinos and crocodiles. The closest species of rhino is mostly in India but their range comes real close to China. It's historical range was all over south east Asia. The Javan and Sumatran rhino had historic ranges very near China as well, but are now isolated to tiny areas in Indonesia and Malaysia. The Chinese Alligator is now restricted to the lower Yangtze river in China but probably had a much greater range back in the day....

The guy supposedly was ran out of china. who knows where he has travelled during that time and what companions he may have picked up. it appeared that the only gorillas was the ones working for him.
