None of the How to Train Your Dragon or Kung Fu Panda sequel scores will be eligible for the Oscar for Best Original Score because they'll most likely reuse the themes from the previous score(s). I know I shouldn't be too dependent on the Oscars (they let The Social Network win Best Original Score over HTTYD of all things), but it is a bit sad that they won't get any of the Oscar recognition of the other scores of their years, no matter how good the sequel scores will turn out to be.

Didn't "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" win best score a few years ago? Harry Potter 3 was also nominated for best score... So, shouldn't that count?

It is kinda sad though... as far as I remember, very few sequels get nominated for best score. John Powell definitely should have won this year, dammit.

Each of the Lord of the Rings scores were slightly different from each other.

I thought that Kung Fu Panda 2 can't be nominated anyway since two composers (John Powell and Hans Zimmer) worked on it. So it doesn't matter if it is a sequel or not.

But The Social Network's score had also 2 Composers (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross). So, that wouldn't be a problem right?

I just read the rules regarding the eligibility and yes, two composers shouldn't be a problem.

Heath Ledger as well. He was good, but not Oscar good.

Not to mention John Williams's brilliant score for "Angela's Ashes". It's very underrated actually, and I have no idea how this lost in year 2000 or so. I mean, the main "theme song" is one of the best compositions I have ever heard. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyMTkNPrx_g)

I usually agree with the Academy actually, in many categories like "Best Screenplay" or the acting categories, they usually choose wisely. But well, when it comes to "Best Original score"... they're not very reliable. The latest example is of course "How To train your dragon", THE best score I've heard in years. I was pissed about it too, but remember, the academy doesn't specify in music. Actually, John Powell won the "International Film Music Critics Association" awards for Best Original Score for an Animated Feature and Film Score of the Year. That's pretty awesome too :D
