If even my myopic old dad laughed at how uncanny young DeNiro looked, what will 2030s audiences think of it?
Don't get me wrong, I still think they technically did a great job and the movie itself is quite good, but CGI just wasn't convincing enough, even if they did the best they could.
That scene was so sad, especially if you can remember Deniro, stomping on Billie Batts in Goodfellas and he raised his legs so high to get that full stomp, LOL. I get that the movie is 30 years old, but they play it so often on TV you'd think it came out yesterday.
The face tech seemed fine to me. The only problem (which others agree with) is that the bodies of De Niro and Pacino couldn't be hidden, so you are seeing their 76-80 year old bodies when their characters are supposed to be in their 40s and 50s. But I would imagine CG'ing young bodies would've been tremendously costly and the movie wouldn't come out until Avatar 3 hits theaters.
Another nitpick is the age of De Niro's face when he first meets Pesci seemed way too old to be called "kid". Pesci calls him "kid", and De Niro looks up and looks over 50. Netflix showed a Behind The Scenes clip of their technology and it's actually amazing what they pulled off, and they had their choice of much younger faces, but they chose a more older 50+ face for a 30-something De Niro.
One possible reason is because if they make De Niro's face too youthful (like his early Mean Streets/Taxi Driver days), it may not have meshed well with his obviously older 76-year-old body. Perhaps they had to go for an older face in the flashbacks so the unavoidable contrasts between body and face aren't too jarring.
