so why January, for this a major "tentpole" action film?

you'd think it might come out in the spring or summer.

There are a lot more movies coming out in the summer that would likely outsell tickets for this. Also, spring is when The Fate of the Furious comes out and it wouldn't be right for these movies to come out around the same time.
