The Triple X franchise has been a complete disaster. Why do they keep making these films?

I guess we all know the answer to this rhetorical question...

Anyway I totally agree that the first two instalments were pretty much run of the mill action flicks which should be long forgotten.

The more interesting question is: Why did they make a sequel to a movie that earned only 71 mio at the box office (on a 87 mio dollar budget) and is therefore considered a box office bomb?

I guess they want to cash in on the popularity of the FF franchise and Vin Diesel's revigorated star power.

This seems most likely.

I think Vin is mostly making this movie cause he can't get a Riddick project off the ground.

The first movie was a hit (277M worldwide / 70M budget... plus many millions more on home video, cable, etc) so they are trying to recapture some of that... also trying to ride on F&F coattails... but the footage released and January opening does not show much confidence from the studio's behalf... also the lead actor is obviously only doing this for the money, had never seen him so out of shape for a movie before.
