Which role was Jet Li supposed to play?

He was supposed to play the role that went to Donnie Yen, and I doubt it. I'd actually like to see Yen become a bigger star in America but this isn't the role that is going to do that. The rest of this was just poorly edited together and had almost no incredible stunt work to speak of.

I'm pretty sure he was supposed to play the role that went to Ruby Rose.

He was tired of being typecast as the martial arts guy, and wanted to show his range by playing a tattooed, lesbian sniper.

he was there because of the asian sponsors.

Li was the original choice for the role of Xiang but due to his current health issues (he officially retired from making movies last year because of this), he had to drop out. Diesel resolved the situation by inviting Yen (fresh off wrapping Rogue One at the time) in the last minute.

As for Li, he hasn't done a great martial arts action movie since Fearless. Plus he let's other people (usually Corey Yuen and his stunt-team) choreograph his own fight scenes rather than doing it himself, which is kind of a handicap in comparison to what Yen does -- acting, choreographing and giving advices on-set using his great influence and working attitude to convince the film crew to give him enough space and time to do things his way.
