Will this film be faithful to the novel?

Or do you think its going to stray away from the original plot?

reply

I believe it's loosely based on the novel. Of course we all know even the novel took certain liberties in its depiction of the real Xander Cage, who was actually a skinny WASP with long flowing locks of hair.

ok, thanks.

I think in the movie XXX's Grandma is already a black belt, while in the novel the Grandma is still just a novice martial artist.

reply

I doubt it will be. No studio is brave enough to do what the original novel did

I wasn't a huge fan of the book, to be honest. I felt it spent too much time developing plot and back story on characters instead of the all out action that the film brings. I think Diesel is too strong of an actor for the role of xxx. I'd rather see a John Cena or maybe GSP in the role. Someone without the talent of Vin to make it a much more realistic role like the original material is based upon.

I think the strength of the novel is that it as chapters from each characters perspective. Kind of like what George RR Martin does with the Game of Thrones books.

Serena Unger, for example, has a pretty rich backstory but from the trailer it seems she's just a pretty face.

I'd say the biggest deviation from the source material is the character of Xiang played by Donnie Yen.

In the novel, "Xiang", or rather ''James'', is a black gentleman who utilizes boxing, not a Chinese martial arts expert. When I first heard they were adapting the novel, I figured they'd cast the wonderful Idris Elba, but I suppose Hollywood's need to pander to Chinese audiences is greater than the need to adhere to the source material.

Still, I like Donnie Yen and I'm sure he's one of the few good things about this movie-film.

reply

Agree. But hey at least they kept the idea from the novel about him drawing on his six pack to fit in so there might be some hope.

reply

Probably not. In the XXX novel Xander Cage is ex-military. He's got a wild streak but he's much more calculating and cautious than what you see in the film. His father is in the novel but both these elements were removed from the film version.
