Why was everyone so obsessed with this movie?
It's just a remake. Numerous classics have been remade. People were judging it before they even saw it.
shareIt's just a remake. Numerous classics have been remade. People were judging it before they even saw it.
shareI think it's because a lot of people were hurt by this insult of a film. Fans of the original had been waiting in vain for years for a fun sequel, maybe even a story of the original Ghostbusters passing the torch to a new generation.
Instead, we get the exact same script with a bunch of stupid, unattractive women who can't act, doing the exact same thing as the men did in the 80s movie. There's nothing original beyond making the story excessively stupid with unfunny humor.
This movie also proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that you cannot trust critics' reviews on how good or bad a movie is. Throw enough money at them, and they'll say whatever you want about the movie, regardless of their own opinions or the quality of the actual film. If you take a look at the critics' reviews of this movie before it came out, many were saying how great it was, or the more "honest" ones were giving it lukewarm reviews. It wasn't until this steaming turd was shat out upon the world that movie-goers saw it for the crap it was, and then the critics didn't have to pretend anymore.
This pile of manure movie also heralded the era of shitty reboots and remakes. I have a feeling it did a "Batman and Robin" and killed the acting careers of everyone involved, save for Chris Pine.
I just saw A Simple Favor. I thought it was a fun, witty, well-made film. Same director as GB 2016.
Is GB2016 really that bad? I have never seen it but I didn’t think the original was all that great. It was certainly no Back to the Future. I do understand the original has a lot of fans, though. I wonder how much of the hatred to the reboot is due to fan backlash vs due to actual quality of the film itself?
I'd say it was a little of both.
shareFrom what I recall, someone in the film claimed if it is a bust it's because of misogyny and anti-feminism, and not due to the script or acting or end product. That instantly made it a polarising movie.
shareWhen in reality it was a movie nobody wanted, fans wanted a passing of the torch movie, the film was nothing like what we've seen before and wasn't interesting enough to win anybody over.
shareAbsolutely not disputing that. I'm just answering the question of why people obsessed over it.
shareAll female movie makes it seem really progressive.

A mixed gender cast would've been a better sell with audiences marketing and demographic wise as seen with X Men or Power Ranger and would've brought in better stronger comedic possibilities as seen in Friends, How I Met Your Mother or Modern Family.
If tried to appeal to the demographic who are into Ghostbusters they may have succeed or failed but if they didn't try to do that than they made a fatal error.
You know what? That's genius. They should have done that. Replace Leslie Jones with Kevin Hart and you got the same character but a short guy instead of a huge woman. Replace Kate with someone like Mulaney or Bill Hader and it might have worked well. There would have been great chemistry between them all as well.
shareA mixed sex team would've better character wise and comedic wise. Bill Hader and and Kevin Hart are ideal choices if you wanted men but if you wanted women Ariel Winter but if it was made in the 90's Janeane Garofalo.
"nstead, we get the exact same script with a bunch of stupid, unattractive women who can't act"
^THE MOVIE IS MEDIOCRE..ITS NO INSULT OR AFRONT TO HOLLYWOOD...SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST IDIOTS.
This movie isn't good, and I very much doubt anyone is saying that it is. But the fact is, a lot of people had decided it wasn't good before seeing it just because it's an all-female cast. I mean, no one is asking for anymore Halloween remakes, but they continue to be spewed out - yet no Halloween remake has received the kind of crap this movie got. Plenty of people even said they liked the newest installment of Halloween.
