Originally Mortal Kombat?
As someone else has said here, this clearly didn't begin life as a Batman movie (it's barely a Batman movie as it is). It got me wondering, given WB animations other franchise work, if this was originally meant to be a Mortal Kombat movie?
Richard Dragon would have been Liu Kang and the real protagonist. Shiva as Sonya Blade, Bronze Tiger would be Jax, and Bruce Wayne could have been Kung Lao or someone with money (who usually bankrolls operations in the Mortal Kombat universe?). You then have the blindfolded guy (Kenshi), and the snake god would obviously have been Onaga (the name is even practically the same!).
The film is far more focused on martial arts than stealth, gadgets or detective work, which suggests early life as a Mortal Kombat movie rather than a Batman movie. The gate works like access to one of the other realms, the antagonist could easily have been Reptile, the links just seem to go on and on!
It wouldn't surprise me if they decided the movie was too weak to turn a profit as a Mortal Kombat feature, opting for a more bombastic story for Mortal Kombat and turning this into a Batman feature instead.
