Not the most disturbing film ever

I heard so much about how thus was the most disturbing and repulsive film of all time. While the content and visuals were beyond disturbing it was handled in a such a comic style with visual flair that I really couldn't relate or feel too much sympathy for the characters. Others films such as Irreversible, The Woman next Door, and Martyrs, and left a far some disturbing presence after I finished viewing them. Does anyone else feel the same way and know of more disturbing films than this? (I mean good disturbing films!!! None of that August Underground crap, I want well made films that are really messed up)

reply

This was the most disturbing I've seen.

Hey there, Naidox,

I see what you're getting at with the fact that this film was way over the top in places, but I don't understand the logic that diminishes it's ability to be disturbing. Interestingly enough, the same comments you make here are similar to how I felt when I first saw Saló, a movie that I felt had nothing but a paper thin plot and seemed to be trying too hard to make me feel disgusted with it. Nekromatik was even worse - I was actually looking forward to that one being over the top, but was so annoyed with the "rippling" effects that the director employed during some of the sequences, and some of the scenes (especially near the end) were laughably poorly executed.

I will give you Cannibal Holocaust - a movie that I felt was poorly acted but extremely hard to watch in places. I have not seen Visitor Q and have only heard about Come and See, so I'll have to check those out.

I will make this last point about whether or not Serbian Film is disturbing, one of the issue that I found hard to shake after watching this film wasn't just the visuals (and I understand that there are two cuts of this film, so I guess that also depends on what version you saw), but it was also some of the concepts. Things that weren't even graphic like the old woman and the last scene, were disturbing - I would even say at a psychological level, because of their implications. The last line of this movie makes clear that even in death, these people are not going to find much relief. Few movies go so far as to make that point.

I definitely see your point about needing to like the film to find it disturbing. I also have to admit that I probably liked A Serbian Film more only because I thought I was going to hate it going into it - it sort of defied my expectation that way.

Y'know what's strange? I also found Funny Games to be mildly disturbing, which is odd because I don't know if it's in the same caliber as these other movies. I think it was just how nonchalant the killers were about their killings.

I also get your point about "less-is-more". It reminds me of An Untold Story. For the most part, the movie tries to be a comedy, which is a shame because I don't think it hits the right notes there. But there are two extremely brutal attacks in that movie that I had difficulty watching.

i think that serbian film should take the crown
murder, torture and rape of typical people in all kinds of horrifying ways....we've seen that in countless movies

Newborn Porn? that's taking horrible *beep* to a new level, in my book they can claim number 1 with that
i've never seen something so horrible ever since

The movie Cannibal (2006) about the German murder case (Armin Meiwes)... Read about the case and watch the gruesome movie. That one definitely left some scars on my psyche.

I have seen Salo, Visitor Q, Snuff, Cannibal H, Vomit gore trilogy, August underground trilogy and a hell of a lot more twisted stuff.
But I still think Serbian Film was the most disturbing of them all. I saw it with my wife and she nearly fainted once the baby scene came up! Have never really seen anything so *beep* up yet!

reply

I saw all those movies and I agree with you. This one is the most sick *beep* movie. I mean, what can top the baby scene? Fook, that was some sick *beep* I mean, torturing people like in Martyrs is Disney compared to the baby scene. Martyrs is just like any other horror movie. Canibal Holocaust is just gross.

No Raylan, I'm gonna bet my life on you being the only friend I have left in this world.

I think Antichrist, Eden Lake, Salo, and Last House on the Left are the most disturbing movies. I can't really even remember what happened in A Serbian Film

reply

Which version of Last House? My viee about the original is that is was vert poorly produced. The cinematography, plot, and "score" were often pathetic. The concept itself isn't remarkable in itself but I think more could have been done with it.

That said, if I told a horror enthusiast the five most shocking facts about the film, I'm sure they would be intrigued, just as I was. But the execution was so poorly done I feel like the film relies purely on its perversion and shock value, while A Serbian Film, without a single redeeming quality, still has much more to offer the viewer in terms of an underlying meaning or "moral."

reply

If you don't find this disturbing, that you've got some issues, my friend.

reply

The most disturbing is "Philosophy of a Knife", by far. Each mentioned above movie is somewhat manageable to see from the beginning to the end. This one not. Try to find it and watch it: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0961119/

reply

I don't know, maybe I read too many comments about A Serbian Film before I saw it. I did not find it as disturbing as many people did. People were saying it's the most disturbing film of all time and I went into the movie thinking it would be, but I did not think it was. Sure there were many disturbing scenes, but a lot of them were so over the top I could not take it seriously. Like the scene when he kills the guy by shoving his erect penis through his eye socket. I honestly found other movies like Dogtooth more disturbing. A Serbian Film had more extreme scenes, but the story and realism of Dogtooth made it more disturbing to me.
