Not the most disturbing film ever

I heard so much about how thus was the most disturbing and repulsive film of all time. While the content and visuals were beyond disturbing it was handled in a such a comic style with visual flair that I really couldn't relate or feel too much sympathy for the characters. Others films such as Irreversible, The Woman next Door, and Martyrs, and left a far some disturbing presence after I finished viewing them. Does anyone else feel the same way and know of more disturbing films than this? (I mean good disturbing films!!! None of that August Underground crap, I want well made films that are really messed up)

reply

I find "The Untold Story" to be the only more disturbing than SF. "Martyrs" and "Irreversible" are not even close.
Seriously, one prolonged rape scene is not what you call "astoundingly shocking". Just compare it to non-stop tolerance-testing of Herman Yau's movie.

reply

Agree on "The Untold Story" being the most disturbing film ever. "Ebola Syndrome" is a close second. Same main actor. A Serbian Film did actually disturb me but it is a visual treat and beautiful at the same time. Untold and Ebola are just gritty and nasty. I still own A Serbian Film. I did get rid off Untold and Ebola. Had no desire to watch again. Another disturbing film I enjoy a bit is Snowtown Murders.

reply

Hmm The Untold Story is a really nasty little flick yes, The Ebola Syndrome is just too damn stupid to be disturbing though.

Visitor Q comes to mind

reply

Oh boy, do I remember Visitor Q- definitely in the history books for one of the all time most disturbing!

MASD-004 that *beep* real

reply

It's all relative. It's like asking people which movie is the scariest or funniest?

reply

I think Salo was a more disturbing film than this movie. I thought A Serbian Film was gonna be a lot worse than it was.

I agree. SF is to absurd and even too funny to be that disturbing. I am a big horror fun, but as soon as I saw just few stills from Man behind sun, and short description of this movie, I felt sick for weeks, I even feel sick now thinking a bout it. It was far far worse than SF because SF is absurd and kinda artsy. MBS is not horror, it's based on something that actually happened in real life, it's not horror, and those stills... I still shudder... I can't even imagine how disturbing the movie is.
No, SF is not that disturbing at all.

reply

I didn't find SF as disturbing as it was just plain absurd/ridiculous. I found some scenes especially comical.

You haven't senn Men Behind the Sun?
It's a must see!
The subject of 731 Butai is one of the most disturbong a cruelest things in japanese history of war. The sad thing is that the film was made with such a low budget, that they had to use all this "real-life-gore" elements, but I think the movie is good, considering it is a low budget, 80's chinese film. To me the scenes with the frostbite looked fake, and the cat wasn't harmed!!!, but people focuses on those "nasty" details rather than the real story behind the film.

In this case, this film obviously is meant to be shocking, all is fake and we all know it, but to think that it might be people as rich and as sick as the "bad men" in here, is really disturbing. The end was very disturbing indeed! The whole show continues!, but it has a lot of very dark comedy touchs and most of the issues has been approached by other filmmakers (snuff movies, rich people paying for see or perform the most atrocious acts, etc.).

Some documentaries are WAY more disturbing than this film.

Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language IMDb = Catch-22

I do think that this film was up there with Salo as the 2 most disturbing films ever made. I am a horror fan but this was disgusting crap. What is the point? I've read that this was an indictment about Serbia during the war, etc.

I never have to look away and I had to look away numerous times during this filth. There is art in horror, crap in horror - and this. I don't even know what to classify this as. This was disturbing and twisted - and the director/writer have some issues - this was just vile. I too had read about how sick it was - and it lived up to the billing. I agree that August Underground is garbage - but this....wow, I have to take a shower and watch cartoons for the next week. Gotta clear those images from my head.

Well, take out the baby scene that is bit fu.ked up, and you're left with pretty much generic stuff already seen in other movies.

and SF is too polished (it's actually well directed) for this type of movie. It should be raw and amateurish like, dunno, GP maybe?

It's of course, personal preference, but for me, Martyrs was lot harder to watch. SF was way too over the top in most of the violent scenes to the point I kept asking "how much you're gonna keep bombarding us with those? Yeah, we get it, you're trying to shock! Get over it!"

reply

Its all relative.
For me SF is so over the top that I can't take it seriously. I love it and find it to be just my kind of over the top, but it does not disturb me.
Man Behind The Sun has it moments for sure, whether a real autopsy on a child or a real body in a compression chamber untils its intestines shoot out its ass. And I fail to see why something based on real life can not be horror....I have never read the rule book on what is and isn't horror, so please post link if you have it.

Martyrs is just a fantastic film that I found more scary than disturbing.

My most disturbing movie remains Cannibal Holocaust....that turtle scene gets me every time. A true gut punh of a movie.

Gotta agree on the 'cannibal holocaust' comment that film gets right under my skin, and man behind the sun although I didn't find it as bad it gets under your skin cause of the facts behind it.

Mentioned earlier was Untold story, I wasn't too bothered by that film although I found it pretty challenging to view in parts especially the 'chopstick' scene :O

reply

Yeah, agree too on "Cannibal Holocaust". It's probably the most infamous of those disturbing movies because of real animal killings. Not cool, not cool.

reply

Indeed not cool at all.

To the OP: I feel exactly the same way. ASF was so over-the-top that it lost credibility very early on for me, whereas Irréversible was so real, raw, haunting, depressing and hellish... Irréversible was a lot more disturbing/intense to me.

reply

I agree, I saw pretty much all the disturbing movie out there. Salo' was quiet heavy but artistic as it had true statement on the political situation back when in Italy fascism was allowed. August murdirum underground crap, Serbian film, irreversible, the girl next door, the untold story and martyrs which it was a very well acted and brilliantly directed disturbing movie. I bought the blueray and only watched once as I couldn't bring myself to watching again.
But out of all those movie cannibal holocust is the only one that makes me physically sick. I cannot stand the turtle scene, I mean all the other animals was really graphic and depressing but the turtle was all another level all together. I had to stop the movie and go outside to take a breath of fresh air. Not cool at all.

reply

Omg yes, it is exactly same for me, I didn't watch Men Behind the sun but I watched all the rest. A Serbian film had one of the most stupidest story (if you would like to even call it a story) the acting was rubbish.
On the other hand Martyrs was incredible, the acting, the directing and the effects was superb. The all reasoning of the movie was very disturbing. Cannibal Holocaust is the Only movie that actually made me sick in my stomach... The turtle scene I had to stop the movie and go out for a breath of fresh air. That wasn't an effect it's real stuff. I wouldn't watch any of this movies again.

reply

Antichrist is probably at the top of the list for me. Great film, though.

reply

Antichrist for sure...
