Rating almost confirms Venom in the MCU

Sony said that the reason they wanted a PG-13 is because they want Spider-Man and Venom to clash and a R-rated film would make that hard.

Now, since it doesn't seem that Sony is interested in a different Spider-Man from the MCU it seems that the two Toms (Holland and Hardy) could appear in the big screen together. That is...

I believe the only thing that Sony and Marvel are waiting for to putt the symbiote in the shared Universe is how the film will be received. If it will be good it's part if not, the two Studios will forget it.

I was hoping for an R rating. Oh well.

reply

Me too, but Marvel and Sony seem like not to have any interest in doing a R-rated film and Marvel probably never will.

An R-rated Venom would have been cool, but it doesn’t bother me that much that it’ll get a PG-13 rating instead. Granted seeing a gritty Venom get as gruesome as it gets would’ve really been something. Either way, they can still get the proper tone for this adaptation no matter the rating. And that’s what matters to me — good movie that captures the essence of the character.

If avoiding an R rating was done not only to connect this Venom to the MCU but to also appeal to a broader audience (much to the annoyance of some), then I’m completely fine with it. After all, there’s a lot riding on this movie.

And since Venom’s origins will be changed in this one, having him eventually meet up with MCU Spidey somehow is something that just feels right. It’s the least they can do. Ultimately, it all depends on how well this movie does.

I would have preferred a R-rating. The character simply isn't family friendly. This rating also shows that Sony doesn't have much faith in the film. But I still think alot of people will see it.

reply

I hear you. I was anticipating this to be rated R since it was announced. But while there is indeed nothing family-friendly about Venom, making Eddie/Venom an anti-hero in the movie - taking a cue from the Lethal Protector series - can probably make that PG-13 rating seem... reasonable. Now I know the character was still very violent as the Lethal Protector, but the filmmakers did say that they wanted to push the limits of PG-13 (similar to what films like The Dark Knight did) if an R rating was out of the question.

Come what may, I’m still cautiously optimistic. But we’ll see.

reply

Yeah making the film R-rated was probably out of the question and I still believe in this film aswell. Though many were hoping for a deadpool cenario and now many are dissapointed even though Venom and Deadpool have two different personalities.

reply

That is BS, they might do a movie with their version of Spiderman in it but it will not be connected to Marvels. Sony only thinks one move ahead, they want to trick as many demographics as they can into seeing the movie and then deal with the next film at a later date.

reply

After ASM I doubt Sony has confidence to make their own Spider-Man otherwise they wouldn't ask Marvel for help. I'm pretty sure it's the Tom Hollands version of Spider-Man who will appear with this Venom.

reply

They gave Marvel Spiderman because they ran it into the ground and can make a nice profit by loaning him out. No risk, all profit. I do not think they have a long game, they can make money by using up popular names while copying whatever is hip right now.

"Tom Hollands version of Spider-Man who will appear with this Venom."

If it even makes enough money to warrant a sequel, that will be about carnage and there will be no third film.

reply

Yes I am aware that Venom may fail, still if it succeeds and the sequel aswell there will be a third.

Also of Sony refuses to "lend" Spider-Man to Marvel Disney will make everything to get him back and succeed.

reply

Complete and total horseshit. Deadpool was rated R for both movies and there's still talks of him being in the MCU. All that would have to happen is that Venom would have to be toned down for the MCU. He didn't need to be toned down in his own film. Complete copout answer. I don't know how anyone could believe this shit.

reply

Deadpool will never be in the MCU. Not only is it a R-rated film (Marvel doesn't make R-rated ones otherwise Daredevil would have had a film instead a tv series) This Deapool is part of the Fox X-Men universe which Marvel probably want to reboot to make there own version of them and because Hugh Jackman is out.

reply

You're not listening. Marvel could easily make a non-R rated Deadpool/Venom/Daredevil/Punisher film even though they were both rated R prior. There's literally nothing preventing that from happening. They would just need to neuter them for the MCU. The idea that Sony made an R rated Venom movie, must mean that now Venom is untouchable in the MCU doesn't make a lick of sense. It's just money.

reply

Yes they could, but Marvel thought a R-rated Daredevil film would make the charachter more justice (and in my opinion it would make Venom aswell) and they simply didn' t make one. But since Marvel doesn't seem to want R-rated films connected to the MCU it seems Sony wants to tone down Venom so it is part of the shared universe Marvel created.

I mean you said it's just money and I think Sony wants to use the MCU to get more it, if Venom is part of the universe I'm sure it's future films would make more Dollars than if it were not.
