I wonder if he was this dorky in real life?

Yes, he was. Actually, it is quite likely that he was worse than this. His life was entirely a scenario where everything he did was right and awesome no matter what he did. So yeah, there wasn't exactly a system of "checks and balances" to determine if anything was cool so a lot of crap got mixed in.

He was a dork.

Good question. But his goofiness as portrayed in the film it makes it hard to take him seriously at times.
