Dean's parents are really modern
I just watched episode 3, and this is something that I already thought from previous episodes, but in this one it's even more clear, the main character's parents have really modern attitudes about parenting.
This is a choice I don't particularly like in this series. I mean, in the original series they had writers who were born in the 50s and grew up in the 60s. Kevin's parent's were not ogres, but they could be intimidating authority figures when needed. In this one they haven't writers who experienced the time period, and they already sacrifice a lot of authenticity with modern attitudes, so what's the need to make Dean's parents so exceptional?. For all of Dean's talk about spankings or whoopings, it's difficult to imagine his parents doing that.
I'm sure there were parents like those, but they were not typical. In the show's defence, they acknowledge that fact, at least when it comes to frank sex talk with their children. But still, it detracts even more from the feeling of authenticity.
