Why does Leslie hate the library?

She loves government services to the public, reads both historical bios and modern works of fiction, and already hated the library long before meeting Tammy.

I think it's a funny ongoing gag but I'm not sure how it fits into her character.

reply

I agree.

Also, libraries in general are just awesome cuz you can rent movies for frickin' free, among other things.

As other people have suggested here, it's more of just a random joke that is funny because it's so random.

reply

Haha yeah like I said it doesn't bother me just doesn't seem to fit her character...her dislike of salad is a little more understandable, but it's similar. She's very concerned about the health of the citizens but happily ran a salad restaurant out of town

I think it was more that she hated the bureaucracy of the library system and the people who ran it more than she hated the actual library. It was kinda ironic given how much she LOVES government.

It was simply an absurd running gag about interdepartmental rivalry, and it wasn't only Leslie who despised libraries. Ron, April, Tom, Donna, Jerry, even Marc did too. Remember when they were all shown trashing the place except Ann who was confused.

Good point. However, when she's running for council one of her platforms was to shut down all libraries. You'd think she'd want to absorb it into Parks or restaff it.

Again, just nitpicking. I always laugh when it comes up. Punkazz book jockies.

Tammy...

She and everyone hated them before they knew Tammy worked there though :)

It's just a joke. Libraries are a place where people can get books and information for free and are usually considered great places which is why it's funny that in Pawnee the library is a place of evil run by horrible people. The fact that it doesn't make sense is the whole point of the joke.

Pawnee hates anything good for you...libraries...salads...fluoride..l

She lost her cherry to her high school math teacher in the school library. That's why she hates library's

If there is ONE good thing governments have actually done and implemented well, it's definitely THE LIBRARY.

Libraries are great equalizers, as they give poor people access to what otherwise only rich or at least well-off people can do. It's a place to go to, even if you have nothing else in your life, you can do a massive amount of stuff in a library, you can find information, music, stories, entertainment and do research.

There's in the modern era, also free access to the internet. Of course an internet connection is nowadays almost like a 'basic need' and it's everywhere, but there have been times when this has 'saved my life' in many ways.

Libraries also usually keep up with 'modern stuff', so you can browse any websites you want and it will work - I mean, if you want to use an older browser on your home computer, library will let you access things you wouldn't be able to on your old PC. You can also pay your bills and do your banking in a situation where you have just moved or something, where you don't have the internet connection installed yet and so on.

Libraries can be immensively useful and practical, but also introduce you to fun stuff you did not know about previously, such as old comics and whatnot (I would not know about Mafalda, Yōko Tsuno or probably even Tintin if it wasn't for libraries - at least for a long time). It lets you read expensive books without having to buy them and so on.

Libraries let you even read magazines you could not afford to subscribe to, or at least wouldn't know about, etc. without them.

A library is an objective GOOD that the governments of the world have agreed upon to actually do for the good of the people, instead of for the good of the corporations. Libraries are basically amazing, so any hatred towards them is sheer lunacy, idiocy, ignorance and unwise (could not figure out how to write 'dumbness').

This only proves the makers of this show don't understand anything - no wonder they made so many bad decisions..
