Wouldn't Ben Wyatt be...cool?

The show makes him appear as sort of a boring nerd, so how was he popular enough to become mayor? Or was it just due to his innate ability to win elections? Did I answer my own question?

He said it was because of voter rebellion. So I think what happened was you had your standard Democrat, Republican, and maybe a few other 3rd party candidates who were all life long politicians while Ben was new and wasn't a politician so the voters voted for him more to not vote for a career politician then actually voting for him.

It's also possible that Ben became more nerdy after the Ice Town incident. He was made fun of a lot and probably spent a lot more time by himself after that so he might have became more awkward and nerdy from that.

nice, thanks for the info

He's essentially a California or upstate New York dude living in middle America. To the small town folk, those people are considered weird.

If Ben Wyatt wasn't so perfect for Leslie (and fictional), then I would be convinced he was my soulmate. He loves Game of Thrones, Letters to Cleo, and is relentlessly logical. I don't think he would have to be "cool" to be elected mayor of his hometown. I could see a politically diverse, suburban town going for something new and unexpected. Not to mention, an arrogant 18 year old is going to seem more popular and interesting than your run of the mill politician.

random question, have you ever seen The Office (UK)?

People see me on IMDb and they think 'you're not fooling anyone.' They know I'm rock n' roll through and through....I actually just did another re-watch of The Office (UK) a few weeks ago. It never gets old. I'm dying to see David Brent: Life on the Road, but I still have a couple of months.

I'm American and have seen The Office a few times, but only watched the first 1 or 2 seasons of the US version. I did get into Parks and Rec recently. I guess they're filmed similarly in that wacky look at the camera with a dumbfounded look style but I like it more than I liked the US Office. Although it did feel like it peaked in the earlier seasons...hard to finish these shows sometimes, they get so watered down. The UK shows are short but that's a good thing.

I'm American too (Jersey girl), but I have to give the title to The Office UK. I was sorely disappointed by the complete drop off in quality that the US Office took. It still had some brilliant moments to offer, so I would watch a little more if you ever get the chance. Just be forewarned that it takes a gradual decline after season 3.

UK shows are often very satisfying simply because they give you substance and a conclusion. Spaced is my absolute favorite though...check it out if you haven't seen it yet.

I honestly prefer Parks and Rec to both versions of The Office. As much as I love an accurate reflection of bleak, cringing reality, I really love shows full of satire that create their own universe (Parks and Rec, The Simpsons, South Park, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, etc.)
