if the wicked witch was somewhat attractive

i may have bought a ticket at some point.

Idina Menzel is sort of attractive - she was well cast on Broadway for the original run. Good voice, good actress, and has hard angular features that are a bit reminiscent of 1939's Margaret Hamilton wicked witch. Margaret Hamilton in green still looked human.

The actress for the movie looks like an ogre or even Shrek.

I also won't go because the casting is atrocious (not just Enviro but everyone) and the production and effects look straight to video.

Face it, if this film was released with no previous theatrical run, it would bomb spectacularly. The pent up demand of many millions of fans of the stage show Wicked ensured asses in the seats no matter who was cast.

They could have used Rosie O'Donnell as Elpheba and this would still be a hit.

What about Wicked being a musical and the fact that Erivo is an excellent singer? I’m directing this question to you rather than the OP because masturbation fodder seems to be his selection criteria for film, whereas you seem at least to have the capacity to think beyond the scope of an acne ridden 14 year old.

Yeah, Hamilton was no looker... LOL. Purportedly one of the nicest people you would ever want to meet though. As a kid, I remember being literally terrified by her performance as the wicked witch when watching her on TV.

Honestly, excellent singers are a dime a dozen. I've seen dozens of plays on Broadway and the West End and I've never not been impressed with the quality of singers. One of my wife's friend's daughter has appeared on Broadway and off-Broadway as an extra and she's got a great voice (described as a "Broadway Belt"), but she's one of thousands of men and women who can sing but get lost in anonymity.

Back when they first talked about making the show Wicked into a film and people were speculating about casting, my opinion was that they should shoot for unknowns (huge pool) and not waste time trying to use "celebrities" because the show's reputation would fill the seats regardless of who headlined, BUT, select the best cast you could. Since name brand faces weren't needed for this movie (rare), they could have gone off the charts in talent.

Menzel and Chenowith were mostly unknowns yet they blew the Gershwin away.

Regarding Enviro, she can sing certainly but is in my opinion a terrible choice looks-wise (I haven't seen her act so I can't comment on that). Menzel looked GREAT in green with her hard/angular features and jaw line which was kind of reminiscent of Margaret Hamilton whose character she is playing. Enviro in green looks like a gargoyle.

Thanks for that response, your thoughts are certainly valid but in regards to Cynthia I still think you are being harsh. Ogre? Gargoyle?? Really???

I think she looks fine. I also haven’t seen her act but I’m looking forward to it when I check this film out. Hopefully she kills it, not that I expect that to silence the chorus of naysayers who seem to have somewhat racist objections to this lady taking a job.

Yes. She's Shrek in a pointy hat.

Hamilton laid down the pattern for green witches with her sharp features which were enhanced by prosthetics. If they used a different actress and didn't make her more striking with prosthetics, then that would be different.
But since Wicked is a retelling of the same characters, some continuity would have been great.

Enviro's features would not lend well to adding a sharply pointed nose and chin features, and indeed, would have raised the cry of "racist" because they were changing a black person's features.

Well, I guess you may have a point if Wicked was a direct continuation of that ancient Judy Garland flick, but it’s not. Have you read Greg Maguire’s novel which the stage production is actually based on? I’d totally recommend it if you haven’t. For one it’s a cracking read, and beyond that it has a strong central theme of Elphaba’s anguish at being less attractive than her friend. Nothing about the promo pics works against that for me.

ps. It’s Erivo not Enviro 👍

But it really is. Wicked only works because we are actually seeing the movie The Wizard of Oz from Elphelba's point of view - same circumstances but different perspective. It's like how Cobra Kai worked so well recounting the original footage of Karate Kid (like the beach scene where Johnny beats us Daniel) but hearing it from Johnny's side.

If Frank L. Baum never existed and Wicked was an original play, this play (and movie) would have gone nowhere. The writer of Wicked took great pains to cover the events of the movie version more than the book.

Yeah - Eviro. Enviro sounds more like an environmental superhero.. LOL

Apparently they wanted to cast something that actually looks like a wicked witch:

I love that photo, she looks so cool, sans eyebrows notwithstanding. It’s giving me Grace Jones vibes which appeals to me immensely.

But yeah, the absent eyebrows are puzzling. Could it be that she had to shave them for the green makeup? I’m guessing that might be the case because I think some hair above the eyes would change the game completely.

Still, total bad ass bitch! Unique people are my type of people, and I don’t see many rocking that look. You do you Cynthia! ✊🏾

I agree with you. It's not so much that she's black, it's that she's hideously ugly. I don't know why Hollywood insists on casting ugly black women in big roles. Surely they could have found an attractive black woman who could sing and play the part just as well? They do exist. What about the girl who played the mermaid in the live action Little Mermaid film? She's not super stunning, but she's definitely a step up from this one.

It's almost as though Hollywood is run by gays and women who have no idea what physically attractive females look like. Either that or they think black women are all ugly, so they cast whoever.

They uglify women on purpose in a lot of games too.

It is just a weird movement, identity politics is a new religion filled with fanatics.
