maybe SATC 2 was right: (today) woman convicted for having sex

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-23381448

the real story of what this woman from norway is going through is worse than what the character of samantha endured but i found it interesting that the film was accused by many to be mean to that part of the world... but maybe it was right on

basically a woman on a business trip went out with a male coworker and she was (according to her) raped... she reported it to police but instead, she was arrested and charged with having extra-marital sex, drinking alcohol and perjury and this week convicted to prison... the scene she describes in how they interrogated her and took her passport was very similar to the scene in sex2 when sam was arrested for being sexy with ricard...

to me, this reminds me how SATC2 entered into a world they probably shouldnt have... how this was a light comedy but made the mistake of venturing into real world deadly serious issues that maybe a light comedy shouldnt have attempted.

while i admire michael patrick king trying to point a finger to that part of the world and highlight how women are treated so poorly... and i think their intentions were good... maybe it was misplaced and maybe it just made people too uncomfortable because it was actually accurate... sort of like if "the hangover" guys did a sequel about fracking or abortion or the plight of the homeless as they are having a fun adventure

The movie was pretty spot on. How do people have a problem with that aspect? If anything, it was more kind about the men of that region than is realistic. Has no one heard of Sharia law?

This sort of stuff has been going on for a while, there were stories like this long before the film was made. I assumed they got the inspiration from the news for the film.

Ashmi any question

It's one of the biggest reasons, even being a man, I would never, ever set one foot in the middle east. The entire region is full of unbelievably gross men.

Ok as someone coming from a Muslim country (even though I don't believe in any religion) and someone who has watched the series and the two movies, I can say that my problem with the movie is not how they showed the Middle East. Middle East is like that, yes, *beep* Try to imagine how it is there to live as a non-Muslim person (thankfully, I do not live in my home country anymore). The problem with the movie was that, while maybe the intentions were good, it came off as extraordinarily snobbish and condescending. Take, for example, the scene where Miranda, as the tour guide of the girls (what was that btw???), tries to explain them burka and the veil thing (I assume also for the Western people who are not familiar with the concept) and then, Carrie, being the great philosopher she is, puts her two cents out there and says "I would never wear this" or something like that and then, they all watch how this woman, with all her face covered, can eat chips as if she is some kind of an exhibition at a museum. Then, there was also the part where the girls follow the Arab women and then, of course, those women, while all covered from head to toe, are also reading American books and wearing the latest line of Versace or something. Of course, because everybody wants to be American eventually, right?? Overall, the tone of the movie is the bothering part. Otherwise, we all know that the news you send the link to is not something new and it is happening in that part of the world. What I do not understand is why Michael Patrick King felt obligated to make a movie in Abu Dhabi, especially for such a movie? Is he a sociologist or a human rights activist that he suddenly wants to draw attention to what's going on in Middle East? Because after this movie, how this comes off is that he just wanted to make fun of the culture there and show off to everybody else in the world that USA (no sorry, just New York actually) has the best culture in the world.

Summed up my thoughts exactly. Thanks!
