It's been said that 3 was called off because 2 tanked. It seems to me that a 3rd would be an awesome chance to redeem the franchise. After a hit series like this one and an impressive first movie, it pisses me off a little that they would drop a bomb like this on us, and just walking away. Especially when we ALL know they can still do better. If you're gonna end it, at least end it on a high note.

SATC 3 is like a piece of Real Estate that while desirably saleable, the owners are holding out for two to four times what it's worth, so it's going nowhere as it sits on the market with aging systems and foundation.
HBO would likely stand on their heads for the chance to bring the next installment to the small screen which would also, as Larry described, give it a chance to end on a note that would be worthy of the series and the talent involved.
That said, returning to the small screen would mean the actresses would have to forgo the multi-million dollar paychecks, which is why a finale has yet to take place.
If only ... :(
