Are the archetypes gender-specific?

Do the 'Virgin' and the 'Whore' have to be female, and does the 'Jock' have to be male? I get the impression there's some more flexibility with the 'Scholar' and the 'Fool' even if the latter is more often a male.

But can you think of any instances in which the genders of these various archetypes have been switched?

reply

In this movie, yes, they are gender specific based on the wall carvings.

The original Fright Night I believe. Charlie was a virgin.

Can't stop the signal.

reply

I assumed that the wall carvings were meant to be representative of the type rather than intended to delineate the genders (i.e. an image of a male jock might represent a jock of either gender for instance).

But the movie is a satire of horror tropes. And in traditional horror movies, those roles are gender specific.

reply

Can the Scholar ever be female? Is that role archetypically male?

reply

Yes. And Yes.

Can't stop the signal.

reply

Yes.

In this movie yes in other movies no in scream the virgin was a man.
None of them in this movie actually fill their part
the dumb jock was actually very intelligent on a academic scholarship
The virgin wasn't a virgin
The fool wasn't stupid
The dumb slut was pre med doctor and was in a committed relationship
The scholar was also good at sports

By CITW archetypes, Randy Meeks would 100% be the fool with Sidney Prescott qualifying as the virgin.

Yeah, that annoyed me. No wonder the sacrifice was doomed to failure. Like you say, none of characters genuinely fitted the various archetypes they'd been assigned.

reply

eh... they work with what they have.

Because in movies, the actors are not the parts they play either. That's the whole point of the story.

It's a satire of horror tropes, which includes assigning specific roles to people whether they fit the exact mold or not.

Let's be bad guys.

Traditionally, yes. They absolutely are.

Horror movies can always toy with them, but

The Ancients(meaning we the audience) have certain conscious or unconscious expectations in horror movies. Nearly every horror movie has the same stereotypes:

The Jock is nearly almost always male.
The Slut it always female.
The Brain is 75% male(the brain isn't always nerdy although it helps).
The Nerd is 50/50(Laurie in the original Halloween was the nerdy scholar in that movie).
The Fool/Comic Relief is almost always male.
The Virgin is pretty much always female although in Scream Randy is a virgin and is damned happy to be so.

However that is American audiences. In Japan it's obvious their requirements are different. Now, I brought up Halloween. Most of the main cast is female but on screen Michael Myers kills 4 people(and 1 dog):

Judith Myers-Killed by a young Michael. She had just gotten done having sex so she's slutty.

Annie-She wasn't slutty but she was always cracking jokes on Laurie so she would be the Fool.

Lynda-She's as close to a jock as they come in this movie as she was a cheerleader.

Bob-Not sure where he fits in. We know little about him other than he's your typical horny teenager. I chalk him up to collateral damage.

Laurie-Obviously she was the sole survivor of this group but she holds 2 of the titles, the Brain and the Virgin. This is probably why Bob was collateral damage because they couldn't kill off Laurie. You have to remember that this was the movie that got the whole horror/slasher genre started so the rules hadn't been established yet but this is as close as you're going to get to females in those roles.

Once Bitten with Jim Carrey.

A Vampiress needed his virgin blood to survive.

I can't recall all of the carvings, in Cabin, but the virgin one was wearing a dress.
So I'm thinking they were gender specific.

Which is lucky for me; cuz I'm no jock, but I am a whore.

The carvings looked like this:

Slut-Woman opening a robe with long hair and boobies. Definitely female.

Virgin-Demure looking woman with head down, long hair. Definitely female.

Jock-Masculine looking figure throwing a spear/javelin

Brain-Masculine looking figure holding a writing utensil and a scroll.

Fool-Androgynous looking figure looking like it's doing a jig holding a goblet. This is the only figure where it could go both ways.
