I would of made a twist ending.
where marty gets killed, but it turns out he is the virgin, and the girl is the jokester. thus the world ends and sigorney weavers mistake.

It doesn't matter what they were in real life (just like real actors in a horror movie), it's what role they were playing in the ritual. Dana was playing the virgin, not the fool.

Exactly. they were picked to play specific parts. It was even stated that Dana wasn't actually a virgin, but for the purposes of the ritual she was the "virgin" character. And Marty was clearly the jokester type, I don't recall Dana making a single joke in the film.
