could've ended better

I get that the ending is supposed to be what it was, ie/ not your cliche happy ending but surely any number of the "workers" that died at the end could've been considered "the fool" pleased the gods with their death. They were almost all killed by some kind of monster and were scared out of their minds while dying.
Also i don't get why there was so much talk about a great twist at the end that no one saw coming, most of it gets spelled out for us through the movie, not the ritual itself but that they are a sacrifice, and the people losing a gods coming back thing actually seemed a bit lame to me and somewhat cliche'd anyway.

I did really enjoy the movie and especially with me being a long time lover of horror I loved all the horror references at the end when they go down the elevator but when I hear this called "the best or one of the best horror movies ever" or how there was some super great unforeseeable twist at the end I have to disagree whole heartedly. It was an easy to watch slasher/horror flick with some comedic elements to it that pays homage to all the great horror films of the past and does all that well but it is nothing more than that in my opinion...

But now a sequel where gods walk the earth and humans are nothing more than rats with a twist of some gods above these gods which are maybe an evolved version of ancient humans who left this rock we live on around the same time these gods where put into the ground that come from a paradise in space because their entertainment (ie/ us humans) has been interrupted could be really interesting

They can't. They weren't part of the ritual. They weren't young.

I'm actually curious about this. What other movies end that way to make it a cliche?

I do agree with this. There is no "twist" like some people seem to think. It's not like The 6th Sense or something like that. The twist is just the satire of the horror tropes. But as you say, it's all evident throughout the movie. The ending is just exposition, not some twist.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

all i meant by saying the ending was a bit cliche'd that particularly in horror movies the bad guys/monsters/aliens win. That you don't get your happy ending, the good guys overcoming all odds and winning. Cloverfield or Hellraiser come to mind straight away but there are plenty of movies that have the no victory for the good guys finish...
i guess they did get there own back in a way by unleashing all the "things" on the workers but that in turn destroyed the world.
I still enjoyed it and I'm definitely not saying it ripped any movie off or anything like that, (altho it kinda is just a combination of a lot of great horror flicks) all the monsters were a nice touch but the gods thing at the end felt like a bit of an easy way out

'Mouth of Madness' comes to mind first with the ending of the Ancient Gods. 'Messiah of Evil' can fit into this too. There are a lot of these movies actually.
