Seems once upon a time they were a noble people rather than work shy charity cases. How did they go from leaders to dregs of society?

Yours is the only true answer. Like all of Western Europe, the citizens of Greece became Romanized and after 1000 years the old Greek culture described in 300 (Sparta & Athens) was forgotten. It was replaced by the Roman way of doing things.

Rome, Turks and Anglo-Saxon happened. After our liberation from the Turks, Germans and British made two political parties that destroys our nation's unity. The rest is modern history.

Empires crumble. The Spaniards held the New World in their hands and a century later, they lost their whole armada to England.
