Why was Jay there?
So he was a bit of a douche, but he should've been raptured or whatever, gone to heaven in the beginning.

shareIn the end credits, the screenplay is based on a short film entitled "Seth and Jay Versus the Apocalypse". And the whole first five minutes, if that's not enough of a clue. Without Jay, there's no point of Jonah Hill being a two-face, or Danny McBride exposing Jay's prior visit to L.A. without Seth knowing.
And he's listed as a co-producer.
It don't matter who you hear it from. It's the same story.
No I mean, I get why the actor's there and I get the purpose after for the character... But according to the logic of the movie, he was already selfless in the beginning. He risked his life to save others. So I never got why he wasn't saved. And I didn't think that one story about him ditching Seth on a previous visit warranted him deserving to go to hell. The rest of them were selfish creeps but he was actually a good guy. Never got it.
shareFrom the start of the apocalypse he wanted seth to abandon everyone else and the two of them to go back to seths.
He then tried to abandon seth with the guy from the office.
It's mentioned in the film that most actors/celebs weren't raptured because they get paid tons of money just to act or whatnot. So most young actors who most likely just use all that money on themselves, did not make the cut to heaven. I.E. Emma Watson or Jason Segel
shareYeah well Jay was actually kind of a dick in this movie, I think this plays for a lot...
shareIt wasn't that the actors deserved to go to hell.
It's that they (and most everyone else) had to prove their worth. Some did, some did not.
I always thought it was because he portrayed a parodied version of a hipster douche actor. Jay is part of the current generation of comedic actors who play the same banal roles in seemingly every film. Critics decry them for their repetitive and unfunny gimmick driven shtick and he acts as if he's a Shakespearean thespian looking down on mere acting students.
That and his rapist innuendo in the Emma Watson scene belies his intent to get him some Hermoine...
