Why did she lost....

Hi peeps

I wonder why no one opened a thread on this subject. No clue was given in the movie why she lost her house and money. They did had a big and fancy house, probably they were rich. What happened?

reply

It's said in the movie. She lost it all during the trials.

As she is seen running from court with the lawyer he says "you'll lose it all, the house, everything" and she says "I hate the house, I always have" (or words to that effect!)

A big plot point they really didn't touch on was that in the trial evidence was used to "prove" that her bad parenting created and was responsible for Kevin and his actions.

Was that in the book? I didn't pick up on that from the movie. Although it would explain why the neighbor's hated her so much.

reply

Yeah, it was. The lawyer and Eva are walking out of the courtroom and he says something like "We will appeal. These reparations are just punitive, you'll lose everything, the house-" and she cuts him off with "I always hated the house." Due to the way the story is told, people tend to read it as being her using the money on Kevin, which wasn't the case.

My best guess is that the legal process was expensive. Her husband was dead and she probably lost her job or was forced to quit because of the scandal. So no income on a house that probably wasn't paid off? She was also probably sued by every parent that lost a child or had a child injured. They had money, but they were probably just upper middle class (not filthy rich) and living pretty close to pay check to pay check. Having a big house (that was barely furnished lol) doesn't mean you can actually afford it.

In the book she was personally sued for 6.5 million bc the parents of the murdered kids looked up her net worth. Then they took her to trial to basically she if she was to blame
