Perhaps I missed something, but whar happened to

Perhaps I missed something, but whar happened to his little sister that caused her to require a glass eye? What was the deal with the liquid drano? Was that to clear the drain because the Guinea Pig had been put in the disposal?

Father wrote about this in his book Ch1Pg1Par1 What is the answer to 99 out of 100 questions? Money.

It was better dealt with in the book. Celia got drano in her eye, most likely Kevin put it there. And yes, most likely Kevin also put the guinea pig in the disposal.

The little sister, BTW, is one of the saddest and most poorly-treated characters in the history of fiction. Boy, did I ever feel sorry for her.

reply

So the little sister turned on the disposal and drano went everywhere? Also, I thought Mom put the Drano in the disposal. Thanks for the reply BTW

It's never conclusively shown that Kevin got the drano in his little sister's eye in the book, it's just heavily suggested. We don't know how he did it, if he did.

At any rate, he KILLS the poor little saintly kid sister, which has led lots of critics of the book to bash the kid sister as being a plot device and not a real character.

Much thanks for the info

I wouldn't call her saintly. She was a normal kid. Its just that in contrast to her psychopath brother she seems saintly.

I really didn't care for the movie, but I was hoping that the sister wouldn't die in the end. That was the saddest part for me.

You okay buddy? Here have a Snickers. You're not you when you're hungry.

The whole scene was confusing at first. They don't even explain how her eye got in contact of the stuff. Even though they talk about it at the hospital it was vague, I had the impression that Kevin had shot at her eye with an arrow which would have made better sense. I believed this more later when Kevin asks who wants to play with him out in the yard with the arrows and asks the sister if she wanted to join him and Eva quickly intervenes like "Oh hell no!", pulling her back to keep her put.

reply

An arrow would have gone into her brain and probably killed her. Also he would definitely be blamed.

reply

Yeah, the arrow would have gone though her skull. But again, all I saw was Kevin using arrows and then his sister's eye seems gone and the whole cleaning equipment explanation and how that even got in her eye was all so vague I didn't get the immediate impression that's what screwed up her eye.

reply

The part where Kevin turns on the vacuum and starts sucking her hair into the machine made me think maybe her eye would get sucked out by the vacuum in a later scene. When the eye scene actually happened, I was under the impression that it was caused by the Drano but I didn't know for sure. I wasn't aware that Drano could cause permanent eye damage so significant that it would require an entire removal of the eye itself. I figured it'd only cause temporary damage. What's even in Drano, anyways?

reply

Something with an acidic spice in it. If a name like "drano" is suppose to clear out cloggage in the pipes, then you can bet some sort of acid is in there to help burn away the particles.

reply

Drano contains lye - which is extremely caustic (causes chemical burns), so it's not something you ever want on your skin or mucous membranes like lips, and the eyes are actually fairly delicate.

From what I got, she said 'I got something in my eye, Kevin helped me get it out' - I think she probably got some sand or something in her eye and he poured Drano into her eye and she was too scared to tell on him.

reply

I thought it was implied Kevin somehow set her up to have an 'accident' involving draino. It seems unlikely that Kevin did it by force, particularly given that she acts no differently around him after the accident.
