Further, that's probably when things really started to spiral out of control, because (I think) that's when Kevin realized he could manipulate and blackmail people. Before that incident, one could argue that he was just a difficult child, but from that point on, he uses his mother's guilt over what she did to him to manipulate her.

There's nothing a family member can do about a sociopath. Sociopaths don't have empathy for others and won't associate being punished with the wrongness of their actions. Instead, they'll just want revenge on the person who hurt them.

Wanting revenge implies they care. Sociopaths don't always seek revenge.
