Review of Butterfly Effect: Revelation

The movie was pretty average. As in any time travel movie, there were plot holes galore. Some of the dialogue, particularly the attempts at humor, was stale. I felt that the two leads gave solid performances (I particularly felt Carmack gave a nice dramatic scene about 1/3 of the way through.) The final twist was unnecessary and was likely added to create something shocking.

Thank you for the info, did you find it better than the second movie?

reply

I did not see either of the previous Butterfly Effect movies.

reply

Oh, OK. I totally recommend the first movie. One of my favorite movies. :)

I enjoyed it. I also didn't see the first two, so I can't compare this one to the previous films. I'm a big Rachel Miner fan. I thought she and Chris Carmack were very good. Both delivered whatever was asked of them -- a pretty wide range. The supporing cast -- all new to me -- was solid. The direction was good, especially for a low budget film. I'm sure there were plot holes (I can think of one right now), but they didn't bother me. It was well paced and made a kind of emotional sense that carried a lot of the plot.

reply

Definitely. The first without a doubt in my top 10. And its so underrated. Sure, It's got plot holes, but if you have a little suspension of disbelief, and you don't analyze it like a friggin rocket scientist, it's a smart and original thriller. Very good, fun movie.

The alternative ending for the first one makes it even a better movie (the directors ending). youtube it if you haven't seen it

reply

It's the REAL ending and makes the movie pretty much flawless. The ending they used was lame and happy. (Studio version we like to call it)

Anyways.....on to this film.

Unfortunately the good things about this movie are a tad overshadowed by the lack of explainations near the end of the film, I'll explain with SPOLIERS!

Ok....the movie really starts out ok, nothing really wrong with it...in fact it's not bad even with the first jump.

The movie adds to the character a new thing but takes away a good thing....this is probably due to budget restraints mainly. New would be his ability to literally go somewhere they don't show us before-hand....just a place and time. No explaination of why he was there in the first place, which according to the rules, is a mistake in the story.(bypass that for now though) However...when he returns he doesn't flash of new memories which I was really missing. He pretty much doesn't come back and know what has happened. (good for story, bad because he's always flashed on new memories with only maybe a few left out or his personality hasn't quite kicked in yet to how he would be)

The simple fix to this problem would have been an easy explaination that was not in the movie and I'm thinking of it as I write. Ok...he has the same ability as the previous characters HOWEVER....here is the big however...... he can jump to anyone's consciousness for however long he feels like. This doesn't work as well in the actual edit of this movie but should have been added to help out the viewers....otherwise who is he jumping to and who is the sister jumping to? Originally he always jumps to himself but this movie seems to omit that for some reason. Or...omit the scenes of what he is doing there in the first place. The place where some people are tortured looks like maybe he could have worked there, but it's never shown with anyone there....like it's pretty much a place where people did work but the machines have not been sold....??? See where this is going?

This movie simply focuses more so on a serial killer he unleashed by going back in time, which is fine, but kinda turns into a gore fest instead of the thriller the first 2 were. I'm even fine with that because it adds a new element to the story.

I can't say it all doesn't make sense because there might have been some scenes that were cut out, but the movie does not focus on what or how things happened, rather it focuses on confusion, and things that DON'T add up to keep us involved and entertained. It certainly does keep me entertained but since I figured out who HAD to be the serial killer, I was searching for answers not gimmicks. I got none. The solution was simple....kinda like the first flick....but not as depressing....basically he un-did saving his sister.

It's too bad someone couldn't have just wrote a movie like the first one and made it like this one with no mistakes and following the rules of the first. Guess that's too much to ask. His sister even knows he can jump and is fine with it...although now I just believe she's there to protect herself cause she's nuts. You'll see if you watch the movie, I left out her reason for going back in time alongside her brother. There is one....LOL....it's a funny but real reason, it's just too bad I can't answer who they are jumping into. If it is indeed themselves....... she is still a killer regardless of jumping but he shows up to stop her and save himself from jail time. There was just a few things they could have added in to tweak the script, but oh well. It's still entertaining....but full of flaws unlike the first one which I loved.

*spoilers*

The directors cut original ending was also lame in an opposite way. Just because it wasn't happy doesn't mean it wasn't totally absurd. Anyone with that power should be able to figure out how to use it in a good way. In fact, he had a pretty good ending even before he tried to change things yet again and make things worse. He chose to commit suicide when things were going pretty well.

One of my favourite movies was the first one, the second I dont remember much (4 kids on the beach at the start, few other random memories) but went in knowing it couldn't live up to the 1st so I remember not minding it. This i couldn't stand, broke so many rules of the first, seemed to be more holes than swiss cheese and I felt nothing for the characters, and the ending (bbq) lame, but i had to see it because i've always enjoyed the premise. "The Butterfly Effect" I dust off and still watch today (director's cut).

This appears to follow the premise of the previous two films, as well as the TV series "Quantum Leap," where the main character can leap back in time during his own lifetime.

However, the original "Butterfly Effect" movie depicted these leaps into his own body as "blackouts" in his memory (since for him, they hadn't happened yet).

In this third movie, there is no effort to explain the physical mechanics of these backward jumps. The character in the future thinks of a date and location, and suddenly the scene cuts to the past, and the character is already at the location.

It should have shown, at least once, what happens when he first awakens in his past body. Was he asleep on the sofa? Was he out with some friends? What was he doing at the moment Future-him jumped into his body? It never shows the moment he arrives in his past body.

This movie just glosses over this, while the original movie made a big deal about his "blackouts." Either the writer of this third movie did not understand the mechanics of time travel, or something was lost in the editing process that would have explained it.

And his physicist friend keeps saying "You'll fry your brain" if he tries to jump back to the same time period more than once, yet he does so, and seems to be just fine. The consequences of time travel are never addressed, other than him having amnesia of the new timeline when he returns to the future.

Well mageslime i agree that the ending wasn't way better than the studio version only because it is absurd, although it did have a lot more emotional connection with the viewer, but the studio ending just seemed a little more logical cause it was kinda ignorant and unnecessary to commit suicide.

but i was originally coming on this thread to ask someone if its kinda like the 2nd one? I mean like the sexual aspect cause i thought that was strange in the 2nd one.....that movie sucked, the whole time i felt like watching a softcore porno but with decent actors in it.

The director's cut of the original movie.... terrible. It was totally inconsistent with the rest of the movie and more than a little silly and felt tagged on. The theatrical cut or cuts (as there are at least three or four variations of it), were all better than the director's cut sorry to say.

As for this 3rd chapter, kudos to the director and the writer for coming with something a little more original than the second movie. It was darker and more edgier than the previous two in look and feel and although the story just wasnt as good as the first movie...it certainly left the second movie in the dust. A huge improvement.

The only problem I had with this ffilm was the sex scenes...why so explicit???

Entertaining movie... I think it would have been better if his character and sister were developed better. The first one was a good movie because they developed his character and his friends and family. Maybe some background on how tight he and his sister were. For a DTV movie it was a cut above and better than the last movie. Also the last half of the movie was very good. If they had a larger budget and developed the story more this could have rivaled the first one.
